Hello all,

i'm wondering if say I have a 10mpx camera and i choose to shoot at 8mpx, will it be less noisy?

i had some hope at first but after thinking about it, now my understanding is that since the no. of pixels is built (squashed!) into the ccd sensor so taking a picture at 8mpx doesn't reduce noise -

what the camera does is take a 10mpx picture, resize and save at 8mpx.

is that correct?

:-(

thanks.

10 MP and 8 MP aren't that different. The filtering process in downsampling does reduce noise though (at the expense of resolution).

Correct. So essentially, the image is still registering on your 10MP sensor wholesale, so the noise level is still pretty much the same. However, resizing does mean a smaller image, which gives the impression that there is less noise.
