If you can start from scratch all over again, with the benefit of your current knowledge, experience, etc.., which cam. body and lens (3 nos. only) will you get; under 2 conditions:
a). "poor" man budget
b). can meet most budget with your hard-earned cash, but try to save as much as possible.

Though it might be a useful ref. ,esp for would-be buyers.

no budget was advised...its could be 1k~10k

Nikon D200

17-35

28-70

70-200

I will not say its the best combo...but for me is just 17-35 and 70-200 will do if i have the money to buy...

followed by these?

12-24
105 VR mirco

oops... didnt notice 3 lenses only...

on a student's budget of $300 a month i would get the following:

1: canon 350d - about 800 now
2: canon 50mm f1.8 - about 100
3: canon EF-S 10-22 - about 900
4: 550ex - about 400
5: sigma 70-300 - about 300
6: canon 85 f1.8 - about 500

total damage: 4000, or about 13.3 months pocket money.

i'm already halfway there...minus the 10-22 and EF85 f1.8

12-24 for landscape
17-55 for walk-around
70-300 for tele

bonus:
tc14EII for more reach

alamak 3 lens only.....realli need 1 prime for low light haizzzz
nvm above 3 will do

If i could start from scratch again, within my original budget, I would get Nikon D200 instead of 30D?? But if I still had to get 30D, then I would get a 70-200mm f/4L instead of this 55-200mm f4-5.6 USM I have. My other lenses will just be about the same. And maybe I'll get a Tamron 28-70mm f/2.8 instead of the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. I feel that I am lacking the reach. I'll leave the 18mm angles to the Canon kit lens.

Sorry, forgot to post mine:

My 1st 3 lens Choice would be:

D200 (alt. D80
17-55 (alt. the tamron equiv.)
18-200VR
105VR (alt. tamron 90)

If budget constraints, I will use the kit lens and quickly upgrade to 18-200VR and get a 50/1.8, and start saving...

(I am an occasional shooter, an experienced novice, like keeping memories of friends and family members during gathering and travelogue.)

(OVer the last 2-3 years, got many lens, many ex. ones some more, all end up resting in the dry cabinet.)

If I can start from scratch, I'll save up and then buy the best lens. Trinities & D200 for Nikon and L lenses & 5D for Canon.

With the current knowledge and desire for better quality pictures.
Either get a PnS or go for the best Lens of either system.

D2H
12-24 Tokina or Nikon
50mm f1.4
105mm VR Micro

Y not D2Xs...
:bsmilie:

If got $$$$, time and can wait...... I'll go for the upcoming D3X (and maybe FF)!!! ;p

If I have to start from scratch and money's not in too bad a shape, I'd choose Canon 5D (only reason being its the cheapest full framed dslr) with 14 - 30mm zoom followed by a 80 - 200mm type of range lens.
Buf if money is an issue, then I'd get a used D100 or D70s with the same type of lens range.

tell you

never start from cractch again... too costly

if i were to start from scratch with my existing budget i would get:

EOS 30D with 500mm f4 IS, 17-85 IS and 70-200f2.8 IS

580EX and other acessories like 1.4x TC, Feisol Tripod and Wimberley Sidekick and Kangrinpoche ball head.

Interesting question.

Considering your two conditions, I would get:

Canon:

Body:
EOS 30D (2nd hand possibly)

Lens:
17-40 f4L
70-200mm f2.8L IS
400mm f5.6L
maybe a 50mm 1.8 thrown in since its realtively cheap

Flash: 580EX

Optional lens (if there's enough cash leftover): Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di Macro

Total pocket damage about 6k plus...
