Hi

I have been doing research for 17-55 and 24-105 lens in the internet for so time and i still can't make up my mind to purchase which lens.

Can some kind soul help to cast some light in regards to the image quality of the 2 lens and the life span of both lens, er... my 18-55 IS just broke down:cry: after 9 month and am afraid that history will repeat itself.

Thanks:)

If I were you, it would be the 17-55.

Why?
More usable range for me (24 too narrow)
Probably sharper than 24-105 ON CROP bodies
2.8
Slightly cheaper

BUT, if you think you are going FF in the future, then the answer may be different.

Reliability depends on whether you get a good unit. Very hard to tell. Even the most reliable model can break down after 1 day. And another unit of the same may last 10 years.

Are you happy with your old 18-55 range? If you're, then it's a no brainer to chose 17-55 as it's considered to be one of the best lens for crop sensor.
If you have other lens to cover the wider end or you don't shot wide then go for 24-105.

Canon 17-55 if you feel rich. Tamron 17-50 if you don't. Canon 18-200 if you only want 1 lens to cover it all.

Indeed, Tamron 17-50mm would be good for a replacement.

On a 1.6x crop sensor, only the 17-55 f/2.8 is an ideal walk-about lens.

If FF, then 24-105 f/4 L. The 17-55 is not cheap but it is a hell of a lens, I bought it about 1 mth after getting my 40D with 18-55 kit. It was so much brighter and faster.

If money is no object, go for it.

Dude, on cropped sensors, the 17-55 is THE ONE.
then it's a no brainer to chose 17-55 as it's considered to be one of the best lens for crop sensor.
On a 1.6x crop sensor, only the 17-55 f/2.8 is an ideal walk-about lens.
If there is only 1 choice, then the 17-55 would be your choice. With a larger aperture (f/2.8), and a x1.6 crop sensor, image stablisation and no current intention to go to FF, choose the 17-55.

If fact, the post has been answered by many fellow CSers. xD

With a tight budget,

Choose a third-party Tamron 17-50.
