How to You get a Nice B&W photo with PS?

hi,

would like to ask u PS gurus out there on how to get a nice Black and White Photo using PS?

i know abt desaturate

but some how my photos look very flat if i just use desaturate

how do i get more tones?(curves?) or do i have to burn?

hope to hear ur inputs!

use channel mixer instead of hue/saturations.

Hi Wainism,

I have tried some RAW to B&W convertion using PS, see if it work for you ?

Hmm... Looks more metallic to me.. :dunno: Maybe its my monitor that is out of calibration... :p

Thanks ortega. My friends do like the effect. After thinking about it, don't think the photo should be call as B&W photo afterall.

What do you mean by more tones?
 

As ths is public knowledge, you might want to do a web search on Greg Gorman. He has posted his technique to do B&W using PS and I have saved it as a action for my Photoshop.
 

For me I will make use of the red channel from the Coloured image, blend that B&W with the coloured image using a color mode.
