How to view & convert RAW to JPEG

Hi! All. I just took some pix with my Nikon D5000 in RAW format. when inserting my SD Card into my laptop, can preview the pix in thumbnails & also in Windows Photo Galllery. However, My CS3 Photoshop can't open the RAW format & pops up message saying the file is not the right kind of document. I'm trying to view the pix & convert them to jpeg format. anyone know of other alternative software prefarable free that i can use?

if im not wrong, you need to download new version of raw plug-in for CS3 as it does not support your camera.

If i didnt remember wrongly, for CS3.. the file to download is camera raw 4.6.. sorry if I'm wrong, cos I came across this problem quite some time ago.

you need to install Nikon View NX(bundled on purchase of the camera) to view and basic conversion of RAW(.NEF) files (to JPEG)...
or purchase Nikon capture NX for extensive RAW editing (I don't prefer personally)..
some lighter and free softwares(free downloads) include Irfanview and Picasa 3.5..
