How to test the sharpness of a lens?

If I were to get a new lens from the shop, how do i know if i'm getting a sharp copy guys? bring my cam and laptop along to test? what shld i look out for?
any tips apart from looking for scratches etc? :embrass:

Google for Focus Test Charts, follow the instructions. Alternatively people have described a method using 3 batteries in a row. Search the forum.
 

sharpness differ from people to people as they all got different eyes. what you want to check for is front or back focusing problems.
 

Get from a familiar shop , test shoot a few shots and check the focusing accuracy by chimping a little. I also look for smooth manual focusing. Then buy. You can always go through a thorough check at home, and any other problems send back the following day. ( Oh of course check for the exchange policies with the shop ) I dun usually spend an elaborate amount of time checking during the purchase..
