How to pack a big tripod to clear customs in airport?

Hi. I like to ask how to you package your tripod to clear customs in the airport and survive the handling? My tripod is the Manfrotto 055CL, which is large and doesn't fit in most regular luggage bags.

Previously, I packed my tripod in my 60L backpack cos I usually go backpacking. But now, I'm using a regular luggage bag, so am caught in this thought process. Tips and advice are most welcome. Thanks.

I just pack my tripod into a bag... Travelled to Thailand with Tiger Airways just like that. Was fine...
