How to dispose of NiMH batteries

what's the best (environmentally-friendly, safe, etc.) way of getting rid of old NiMH batteries? i have a whole bag of the notorious Sanyo 2500mAh's - already replaced once by Sanyo but exhibiting the same problems - to toss away.

hey yeah wait for the next it fair. I got the powerEx for 10 dollars for a set of 4 (2700mah) when i traded in 4 old rechargable battries.
