How to calculate DOF?

Hi everyone,

To the best of my understand of DOF, it is affected by the focal length of lens, aperture size and lens/subject distance. My question is, how do i know how much is the DOF thru calculation if i hv the 3 above mentioned factors known?

I know that on my D100, there's a DOF preview button but find it hard to judge esp in low light condition.

Hope someone can enlighten me

If you use the program to creat customised DOF chart for your lens then you do not have to calculate. Just use the chart.

i've always wished there was a simple approximation to calculate DOF, like the 1/focal rule of thumb. Anyone stumbled across one yet?
