How many languages are u fluent in/understand?

In addition to Pro_Image's post, lets take this survey and see how many languages Clubsnappers are fluent in or understand.

Dialects.... Its part of ur mother tongue so shldn't be counted as foreign languages.

Able to communicate, literacy fluency or even the mere understanding (apprx 85%) of a foreign language would qualify.

me is English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Malay (write a bit, dun ask me to speak... the Malays will die laughing...) and Hokkien... but only the swear words. :bsmilie:

well.. mom is a malaysian.. so more or less can listen la.. speak a little, enough to communicate with the locals..

English (1st language)

Chinese (2nd language, can't write well, but all thanks to taiwanese tvs, i can speak and sing well~~~ XD)

Malay (3rd language, can onli speak sufficient to communicate but cant write.)

Hokkien (4th, used that to communicate with taiwanese friends and locals too.. family also sometimes speaks hokkien)

Cantonese (5th, work place. 30% hong kong man, and most of them cant speak english or proper chinese, so thats where i picked up cantonese.

tats all... still learning a little bit french since my boss speaks french...

Actually dialects not counted as language

Me can speak and write english and chinese.

Malay can understand a bit and can speak a tiny bit.
German only this : Ich Spreche Kein Deutsch (meaning: i cannot speak German)

if dialect counted:
Can understand Cantonese very well, can speak but slow.
Hokkien, can understand a bit (especially when people scold me :bsmilie: ) can speak a bit

Heh... I'd consider dialects seperate from mandarin. There are a lot of old folks who can't speak mandarin but can speak dialects.

I think my late grandmother would take the cake in this.. She spoke mandarin, hakka, teochew, hokkien, cantonese, hainanese, malay, tamil and in the WW2 days, Japanese and she also understands and speaks basic english..

Assuming if we are including dialects as 'foreign language', how many of us can really speak our own denomination's dialects fluently?

Nowadays I rarely hear ppl my age speak pure Teochew or pure Hokkien, its usually a mixture of Teochew + Hokkien + Malay. Thanks to NS. :bsmilie: Is our society getting too globalised for its own good?

Excluding dialects, I speak 3 languages, however, I don't consider any of them a foreign language, so it is more like English + 2 mother tounge (which there isn't an option for it). If I were to consider one to be a foreign language, I'd pick English. ;p

actually not really true, i find that most malaysian i know can speak and write malay, and only either english or chinese (except me that is )

I won't vote in the poll since I feel it's options are flawed.
I speak: English, Singlish, Cantonese and Mandarin.
Understand basic Teochew/ Hokkien, not to be confused with cruder languages like Hock-chew.

Hokkien -> hometown frens & gf
Bahasa Indonesia -> fellow compatriots/frens
English -> everyone else

Everyday I must speak the 3 languages & 1 dialect above. :sweat:

Picked up Cantonese -> from M'sian & HK frens when in Uni

Next in the list would be Japanese... :lovegrin:
