How do you use DOF preview on the 350D?

I've read the manual, but it doesn't explain much.

When I click the preview button (below the MF/AF switch), the image in the viewfinder simply darkens.

Anyone?

It stops down the lens to the slected aperature to show you the DOF. Useful more for the tele end of the lenses esp if you are not sure if you can get all the elements you want in focus (like the eyes and muzzle of a dog for my case) I dont usualy use it either as I go by expereince...
