Hi,

Would you mind share how do you name your photo folder or filenames so that it allows you to search for the particular image you want? I have trouble managing thousand of images in my library, wish to receive some useful information from the gurus in this forum.. :)

Example:

Type: Portrait, Scenery, Macro ...
Country/location: Amstersdam, Tibet, Langkawi ...
Date: YYYY MM DD
Serial:
ETC..

Thanks!

I don't rename image filenames.

I just name the folders.e.g.

2006_12_31_Wedding_John_Jane
2007_01_28_Places_My_Backyard
2007_02_26_People_Naked_Pictures_Of_Self

My file naming sequence is yymmdd_(Location & Main Heading)_Serial number_(Sub heading).

For example, 20060119_GentingHighlandOutdoorThemePark_08_FlyingCoaster

never had the problem of searching them. maybe I'm not taking as many photos. ;p Just classify them into folders and subfolders when u download that time. once and for all. Normally I'll put the PSed and framed version within the folder with the originals.
hope that helps:)

I name folders this way:

From [Camera Name and Model] - [yyyy][mm][dd] - [Subject/Title]

Subfolders for dSLR-taken photos:
1. NEF - Raw
1.1 NEF - Raw For Processing
2. Processed
3. Bordered
4. Resized

:)

Hi all,

Thanks for sharing.
Allow me to give a typical example:

I go to Shanghai often and on a particular trip I attended a party. I reached there early and shot some scenery shots around the area. During the party I shot some people and group photos, as well some portraits.

The question is how do I name the folder(s) so that it allows me to search by DATE, COUNTRY, PLACE, PORTRAIT, GROUP, SCENERY .....?

I guess one way is to sort the images into different folders like below:

[DATE]_[COUNTRY]_[PLACE]_[EVENT]_[TYPE]
20070225_CHINA_SHANGHAI_PARTY_GROUP
sub folder 20070225_china_shanghai_party_group_PRINT (for printing)
20070225_CHINA_SHANGHAI_PARTY_PORTRAIT
20070225_CHINA_SHANGHAI_PARTY_SCENERY

Do you see any defficiency? (I do not want to re-name all my folders only to find the short comings and constraints later).
Is there an easier and effective way? Please share how you do it. Thanks :)

Cheers!
