How do I produce quality images?

Hi all,

i've been using my nikon d40x, 18-55mm lens for quite some time now. but when i compare my images with pro images, i see the lack of quality in my images, as in the sharpness n true like colours.

My question is, what makes better quality images? Is it due to my low-end dslr, the lens..?

Would appreciate if u guys could help me out with this. Thank you.

not really... I've seen examples from this set which are quite good. It's how you create your images.

Shoot more, and do more research on photography.

You may want to learn some pp skills with softwares like Lightroom or Photoshop.
They can make wonders to your pictures.

Did you apply any post processing (eg Photoshop) to your pictures? -> results in better contrast, sharpness etc.

Did you use a tripod rather than handheld for your landscapes? -> sharper photos.

I love taking images of people but it just isn't the same as pro images. The quality just isnt there.

Hmm.. but im sure pros dont always rely just on PS n lightroom, rite? or is that how they do it??

Getting the correct exposure is the main key, afterwhich, PP is required to get the image to pop...

You do it thru hard work. :thumbsup:
a lot of trial and error and review

how long has you been taking photo?
how long have you use the camera?
how long have you use the lense with that camera?
how many pictures has you taken with the camera?

By the way, do not compare your d40x photo with another good photo using d90 for example, or d3 or d3x. Different camera has their strength and weakness, even with same brand. Different lense combo with different camera has their strength and weakness.

now who says using dslr and you automatically get a better image than p&s?

Using dslr allow you to control more, almost total control (cant replace the sensor for example) but can upgrade camera body and keep good old lense for example.
With more control, you can achieve near perfection, provided you have the control.

Also what kind of pro are you referring to?
Each pro has his/her own specialisation.
What specialisation are you referring to?

portrait? Studio Model? Candid? Event? Fashion? IC/drivers license? baby? XMM?
landscape? day or night? cold or warm? city building or natural landscape?
animal? insect? bacteria? domesticated animal like dog/cat? animal in captivity? wild animal in natural habitat? bird? fish?
sports? chess? fishing? rugby? F1?
static? minature? fruits/flowers? car? defense equipment? construction equipment? watch/jewelry? painting replication?
abstract? (read lots of photoshop)

you know where I am getting to? there are so many thing you can photograph. you cannot be possibly be pro in all, seriously.

Equipment does help, and so does photoshop. I'm not sure if Tamron 90mm can be used with your camera, but if it can, maybe you can try one out in the shop / rent one for a day to see if it makes a difference to your shooting. Was my first and only lens for quite a while, and I'm still very happy with it. Is especially good for portraits.

if u refer to sharpness and colors,

1. good subject
2. good lighting
3. good weather (less haze, clear view)
4. proper exposure setting
5. proper focus
6. proper handholding stability within reasonable shutter duration
7. good lens
8. judicious post processing enhancement (not for sharpness though)

if you have 1-6 all done, many lens and bodies (including all the older models) can give satisfactory results in terms of sharpness and colors. they are listed in terms of importance, highest priority in #1. you have to see which one is the bottleneck, if not using the best body or best lens, you still can't change a pyramid into an eiffel tower.

but if you want to compare the rest to be similar to professional photographers, it is similar like asking how to dance like a professional dancer or how to run as fast as a professional athlete... they can't be taught in a crash course on a forum.

i share the same question with the ts. for now, i think photography has made easy with the
IT these days. it's never be the same as like those film camera we used decade ago. unlike
the DSLR we're using today, there's no shortcut in producing a good photo from a film
camera, only skill.

today, if u can master a kungfu of PP, even your image from a PNS can be looked like any high-end cam. with the HDR, it talks even louder. :embrass:

PP can do so much...so much...so much...
