i know there are software that allows you to recover deleted harddisk.

is there a way to truly delete from harddisk?

do the software you find online work?

Open source Heidi Eraser released under a GNU General Public License (GPL), multiple options to securely wipe files, folders, unused disk space in compliance with US DoD 5220.22-M (NISPOM 8-306 /E) or US DoD 5220.22-M (NISPOM 8-306 /E, C and E) standard along with other purging or sanitizing of data remanence algorithms ranging from the Schneier's 7 pass to the Peter Gutmann's 35-pass. ;)

Open source Darik's Boot And Nuke (DBAN) self-contained boot disk as an alternative if your Hard Disk Drive (HDD) is no longer accessible. :)

According to DoD, you have to overwrite it at least 4 times.
Not true, a single and thorough wipe with useless bits of data in enough to counter data recovery even with highly advance and sophisticated Magnetic Force Microscope (MFM) or a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)/Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) analysis in modern Hard Disk Drive (HDD).

Though many defence companies and organisations that handles highly classified and confidential data actually requires the entire Hard Disk Drive (HDD) be magnetically degaussed or physically crushed when disposing of the Hard Disk Drive (HDD). :)

Destroy the HD. Drive a nail thru it if you can. Or you can also overcook it on some BBQ charcoal.

Use TrueCrypt ( http://www.truecrypt.org ) to create an encrypted file container with serpent-twofish-AES encryption to securely store your file.

As what 9V-Orion Images mentioned, use Heidi Eraser for erasure.

That should be the easiest.. and effective for any software based recovery attempts..

If there is any chance that the HDD might end up with someone who is interested in the contents and has access to advance equipments.. And the Data is highly sensitive.. might as well just cook it.. or crush it, as suggested by others..

Low level format

use a hard disk degausser...

or wipe it out with electromagnet.

or wipe it out with electromagnet.

May not be effective. Unless you take out the top cover and put the magnet directly on the disk.

The HDD inside already contain a very strong NiFeB magnet. If that magnet doesn't affect the data, it is unlikely that any magnet held above the top cover and shielded by the steel can do much to the data disk. corrupt some data maybe.. safety remove all data.. maybe not.. A car electromagnet magnet is different story.. but who can access to that readily?

u can just go tow a car. then ask that person longbang put the harddisk inside

Then the magnetic field will be shielded by the steel chassis of the car....... The magnetic flux will go around the ferro-magnetic steel body, instead of going thru it.

If you put the HDD on top of the car.. you might get a chance of success.

Use a software to format the hard disk with random 1s and 0s for 7 times. This is the industry standard.

Ask Edison Chen, he should know.

To completely erase a hard disk you need to find a high priest to exocise the ghosts in it.

It will involve cutting of chicken heads, chanting and burning joss sticks and papers. This is best done at 3am when the hard disk ghosts are at their weakest. :)
