Honeymoon

Hi all, I will be going to Australia (Mel and Tas) for my honeymoon.

Just want to find out what are the basic things I need to bring to for shooting over there. I only have my SLR camera, one standard lens (came with the camera), and tripod.

Appreciate your advice. Thank you.

You need to be more specific. Things like places you will be visiting, what you want to shoot and how long you can get to spend in each place will decide what type of gear you need.

Also, it's not clear what camera you have? SLR- which model? Each model have its adv and disadv and so can use cable release or remote etc?

Lens- whcih standard lens? If normal SLR for nikon, prob 35-80 or 28-80?

Sorry, what I meant was, though those are the basic stuff I have, are there any other basic stuff I need to buy or borrow from friends.

I am using the EOS 66, 28-80mm, 3.5-5.6II lens.

I will be going to Melbourne for 3-4 days, then to Tasmania for 3-4 days, and back to Melbourne.

Where exactly in Mel and Tas, we have not decided yet. I presume we will be taking mostly scenery shots.

I am really new to photography, so not sure what is needed.

Extra lens? Filters? Flash etc....

Just buy lots of film in Singapore. Bring extra battery.

You lens might not be top class but it should do the job.

Read up on the manual if you havening been using it for a while.
Since this is once in a lifetime trip, you might wanna test drive the camera before the trip.

A tripod will be useful if it is just the 2 of you traveling and you wanna take a pic of both of u in a certain setting.

This is your honeymoon! This is your priority!

Your equipment is fine! Take plenty of memories pictures! This is not the time to learn how to photograph. But do bring a tripod. You will want to take pictures with both of you together. And there might not be passerbys to help out.

What student and others advise you is true. You will need to make sure you have spare film and batteries as it's much cheaper in SG.

BAsed on what you saying, i guess you have not done much planning yet. I suggest for Melbourne, you cover Great Ocean Road, Grampians, Sovereign Hill (these 3 places will take you about 2 days out of city).

Within city, go toSouthbank, visit Crown Casino and area near there, including victoria arts theatre, Royal Botanical gardens, Victoria Museum (1 day).

Other places to go in City, go to Federation square, Rialto tower (if you want to see skyline of melbourne), docklands (never been there but heard there's some stuffs to look around) and maybe South Yarra for some boutique shopping. (1 day)

Honestly, if you only have a week, forget about Tasmania as Melbourne is more than enough for you. Visit tasmania only if you like scenary a lot and dun mind self drive.

Equipment wise, not sure what else you have but 28-80 is a good walk around lens. If you have or can borrow, get a wide angle (say 19-35mm? for landscape) and a 70-300 or 80-200 tele (for some close up and street scenes).

Tripod, only bring if your wife dun mind and you do self drive. Otherwise, most likely won't use.

When buying film, get some Asa 100 and Asa 400 films (i recommend Fuji Superia) and if you really want nice skin tones, get Fuji Reala (S$6+/roll)

like what many has suggested, your lens is good enough for quite a lot of coverage already, and since yours is a film cam, no need to worry about the multiply factor, 28mm is wide enough for a lot of scenery shots. =)

just remeber to bring the extra batts, extra rolls of films and your lens cleaning kit. tripod is good when u go to those hill side with your wife and there's no passer-bys. :wink:

guess i kinda repeating what most others have said, hehe, on a side note, mel has e world smallest pengiuns, if ua nd your wife are a fan of animals, do check them out. (the beach is quite cold though, bring warm clothes) i went to mel for about 2 weeks a few yrs back, took about 7-8 rolls of films... dun save on films man... hehe

your gear is fine. bring tons of film and a spare battery. make sure you and your wife are in the photos. not just you or not just your wife. it has to be YOU AND YOUR WIFE. smile alot, look silly, don't be afraid to hug and kiss, laugh out loud and most of all remember that you're on your honeymoon, not some package tour or business trip, your honeymoon!

haha .. might wanna get a x-ray bag for the film ... or talk customs into NOT passing your film through the x-rays ... (they say the x-rays don't affect film, it doesn't but it affects the colours) ... either that .. or get it washed over in aussie but perhaps not printed or cut yet ... (some printers would complain if u give them 200 negatives .. .all cut into 4 pieces each lolz ... would take them forever to print ...

Aiyoh, for honeymoon why you worry about photography?? After 5 years of marriage you can always go back and do a SERIOUS photo trip :bsmilie: . Just bring what you have and enjoy lah! For your purposes, maybe a small cheap digicam and a few memory cards may be more suitable. Nice and light and dun have to muck around with film. YMMV and enjoy the trip, only happens once (usually).

Your equipment should suffice. I've been to both places and scenery is nice. Bring a polariser if you have one for the beautiful sky (make it more blue) and the lake (reduce reflection and glare). Your tripod will come in useful for night shots. Get the locals to shoot for you and your wife. no need to use tripod lah for that because waste of time.

My pictures mostly my wife only but ok lah. I not as pretty as my wife:bsmilie:

Huh? What X-ray bag? Never heard of. Please tell me more.

learnt from the pre-newbie course i attended at slcc =P ...

looks like this ...

basically its a bag (usually lined with lead inbetween the fabric/plastic) it protects film from damage due to airport x-ray scanners ... try and hand-carry the film in the film safe bag/x-ray film bag cos the handcarry x-rays arn't as strong ... and u may be able to have them hand check the film containers ...(avoids the xrays totally! )

they say the x-rays don't damage the film, it doesn't damage the film .. it damages the colour =(

btw, more links to x-ray film bags ... (mods, not my webbie hor ... so hope u dun mind .. otherwise just take it off or let me know so i can take it off)

i guess you will be with your wife most of the time. given its your honeymoon, i'd say drop the tripod as you will be able to shoot in the day hand held most of the time. its a real drag and if you need to you can improvise. then your hands will be free for some other more important matters (your wife and her shopping).

i'd imagine you will have many nice dinners, so pack in a nice fast wide angle lens and table tripod (pack-and-go type), and please take plenty of pictures of you together everynight and have fun setting your camera to timer mode.

fast film and B&W films are fun too and will add variety to your eventual album. you must get the polarizer for camera and good sunglasses for yourself. it can get very bright out there.

keep it light and simple, and try to enjoy yourselves - congratulations and have a nice honeymoon.
