While I know they'll unlikely be successful in their endeavour.... still better to believe and take action... then sit on your butt and only complain all day all night long...
SAR locals (aka HongKonger) should decide on their own future... for whatever benefits and/or problems that comes along with that decision... :think:
Need to remember HK is part of China as acknowledged internationally. What happen there is there internal affair.
Similarly, I am sure no other countries like 3rd parties to get involve on how they run their country.
What we are observing is just 1 side of the entire story. Why would the west, especially the Bristish suddenly show so much concerns on democracy when they ruled 100 years with their own governor?

Oh please, the People's Republic of China (PRC) are more capitalist than anyone could ever be (albeit the market is liberalised with state-owned enterprises). Are there still people who feels the Communist Party of China (CPC) is embracing the nature of socialism other than as a symbolic gesture paying heritage to the reasons for their very sole existence?
Ironically, some of the most "democratic nations" with the most perceived level of freedom in this world are also the most authoritarian. What gives? :bsmilie:
The Hong Kong people are just sick of their city being destroyed by giant robots and Kaijus.
Big brother has the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone (Dongguan, Foshan, Shenzhen etc. etc.) in Guangzhou with a population of some 40 million. They don't need Hong Kong two decades ago and they clearly can do without it even now, can't say the same for the other way around.

So you see what's at stake for China beyond HK. From China's point of view, it must ensure that the HK protestors not win - which is easy given that in this case, it has all the advantages. However, how the protestors are made to lose is also important. Too soft and it will "embolden" the others. But too hard will result in these guys digging in and concluding that there is no other means than violence - long sustained violence possibly brought to Beijing's doorsteps - that at least has a chance.
All these may still have a silver lining: it will push both sides to compromise and come to a peaceful settlement. It is therefore unwise for the students to up the ante till so high and both sides cannot climb down.

That colonial superior mindset is still very much embedded in many minds. It the the work of media through movies, etc. sad but true.
Ever since china took over HK, HK ppl had been suffering silently over China's influence
It doesn't help when thousands of PRCs flock to HK to buy milk powder, diaper, litter their streets, display their crude behavior in public areas
HK ppl is getting fed up with them.
And their 'elected' governor is a puppet.....

They call the Chinese overlords 阿爷.
How the Occupy Central pans out doesn't depend on the protestors. It depends on how 阿爷 wants it to go.

It's not going to happen now . If China gives in , it will have even worse problems in Xinjiang, Tibet and with Taiwan .
Xi Jinping already upsetting a lot of party members with his anti-corruption drive , he will be purged if he gives in to protestors
When China' new young progressive leaders step up over the next 20 years and itself moves in that direction then odds for democracy will be alot better

Look at Soviet Union for example . The West did not 'win' ...the CCCP just crumpled
