as for TS, try editing the image? i see that most details are intact. could attempt to do an S curve and try make it more dramatic.

and are u sure urs is a 50mm 1.8? o.o why the bokeh is doughnut rings. this looks more like a mirror lens to me

Yes, i took it myself with 50 f/1.8, i don't even know what mirror lens is :D
i tried to s-curved it but its a bit dark for my taste, and i try to retain natural daylight feel
thanks for the input

why not try er... using light room. see if u can up contrast and clarity

would a portriat shot be better?

Waahaahaaa... nice one. Ok, jokes apart. I think you could improve the image with a little PP of adjusting the balance, the blacks aren't dark enough.

I would agree with this too, a portrait shot placing the hippo on top right and showing a bit more of the water leading from where you took the short would make a pleasant composition too.

Nice pic ! I am just thinking.. that the story of this picture is not finish. if you wait a little longer for the hippo to open his mouth and really drink the water.. The picture you took is like the hippo is going to drink not drinking yet. I think it may be nicer.
