Welcome to CS.

1st, do note that owning a DSLR can be a investment, commitment, and can be one expensive hobby. :D

At least let us know your budget, ur shooting style etc.
Why only zoom down to Nikon or Canon, there are also many good entry-level DSLR of other brands out there.

hi akszaksz,

good day to you , well i did checked up with some of my buddies ..some of them whom are into filming, video shooting and stuffs...
they told me the best in the market are these 2 models..and they heavily recommended the Canon model to me..they say its very user friendly..and the pictures really turn out well..
yeah, i understand the investment part of it...but i guess i'm ok if there is something that i can start off with..not necessarily a with a new one though...budget can be within RM2K to 3K.

i've using digcams for sometime now, but not very extremely active with them...i'm thinking of making it a hobby if i've got one good camera later on...i love taking pictures, esp those related to nature, wild life, sceneries and candid shots..i'm not that very excited about the normal shots like someone posing and you say cheese and then we snap the photo...

anyways..i am eager to understand more about photography from you...:)

I myself have lots to learn, still consider a newbie;p

anyway, do test & get the feel of those camera you interested. Either from your friends or from shops who has working display set.

It's obvious that they are CaNikon'd. I, too, was once like that, but after critically evaluating other brands such as Sony and Pentax, at the budget dSLR level, they can top Nikon and Canon.
Try reading up on the a550, a330 or the Pentax k-x :)
But if you insist on Canikon, then go for at least the D90 or 500D.

gibss.

This will not guarantee or imply that your pictures will turn up great. It's a tool that requires learning and understanding - sometimes quite technical aspects. Think twice to copy other people just because it's more than one having such a camera.

Putting this question into a different context: "I'm new to cars, I want to learn driving. Which car should I get?" - What would be your answer? :)
As mentioned by others, there is more than Canon and Nikon. We have a Buy&Sell forum here, but since you are at Penang it would require you to come down to SG for the deal. Search the equipment forums, see the feedback of the users about their systems. Finally, go to the nearest shop and try hands-on how the camera feels in your hands.

Take note that a DSLR does not immediately mean better photos. Yes, it can be intimidating (or feel lacking) when everyone is carrying a DSLR, but be confident in what you can produce from your camera.

RM3K would approximate S$1200, right?

I'd recommend you a Pentax Kx. ~S$950 with 18-55mm kit lens. Fully featured for the price with little lacking unlike many other entry level models from competing brands which are at the same or higher priced.

These friends that you mentioned, any of them using Canon / Nikon?
You mentioned vido shooting and filming, never say snapping photo, so I'd better ask.
If you will hang out with them often for snapping and your friends are majority from canon camp, then buy a canon.
Cos you can speak same the language, share stuff, especially lens.

Welcome in~~~ ;)
