What exactly prevents you from taking pictures of the esplanade building with your D60 + kit lens?
Go and try, learn about your camera and the basics of photography. This forum is packed with information - you just need to read, learn, try, re-read, retry ... you get the idea
Once you see the limitations of your current lens you have already a good pointer which other lens could possibly help you. But don't focus only on gear. Skills can overcome limitations of gear (to a certain extend).
Kit lens will do fine. If you're taking the pictures in the night, a tripod would be more desireable.
