1) A prime lens is one with a fixed focal length, for example 50mm f/1.8 is a very popular prime lens. Examples of NOT prime lens are lenses with varaible zoom like the 18-55, etc.

2) Best place is whenever you need to change it. Don't be a slave to your equipment. If its dirty, it can always be cleaned, it does not have to be treated like a princess.

3) Takes 2 seconds to type in prime lens into google - I can give you answers, but its so much faster to search for it yourself most of the time.
