Help Please! Nikon 80-200 or Sigma 50-500???

Hi all,

I am thinking of getting a zoom lens for myself.

Originally thought of the Nikon 80-200 2.8 af d but now starting to consider the sigma 50-500.

Your views and suggestions will be much appreciated. :bsmilie:

Wife will hang me first, anyway she is buying the lens for me.

What about the 2 touch version, just the AFD??

big mama shld be more for wildlife, birds etc etc..........

I will choose the 80-200mm anyday. Get the AFD version at S$1650 or lower.

Both lenses are for totally different uses. I have both, sort of. Guess you need to tell us what do you intend to go for. Else comments won't be useful at all.

I have both too, agrees with 2100 that both has it own good points.

bought 80/70-200mm first, v good lens but abit short!

than buoght 50-500 good with TC 1.4 though need good light!

Me will keep both, cause both has its own uses!

advise: buy a used 80-200 for speed (2.8) plus a cheap 3rd party 400/5.6 for the occasional longer reach.

I am already using a Tokina ATX 80-200 f2.8 (not pro version).

Thought of getting the nikon for the contrast and the sharpness.

Would also like the added zoom of the sigma. Thought the nikon will be good in portraits but shooting wildlife up close will be fun too.

Torn in the middle?

Can also consider the Sigma 100-300 F4. In terms of optical quality, this one is on par with the 80-200 and also, relatively fast at F4. And pretty affordable at 1500 or thereabout.

Also, this is a constant length zoom, so that air is not exchanged with the outside as you zoom and focus. As a result, your lens and your sensor would remain clean for a long time to come, if you like to think long term. By long term, I mean a year or two.

With some dust in a 20 element lens like the 50-500, it's gonna to have lots of flare and become very, very soft. BTW, in the first place, it's already soft in the long end brand new as a 10x zoom.

Just to share what I have learnt.
