help needed on travel info to angkor wat

hi, i be going to angkor wat, cambodia, late june for a wk, with a group of friends. so far we only got airtickets fr silkair (online promotion, got it at $280 when it usually cost $600++) and nothing else. need info on the followings:
1. which hotel/hostel to stay? budget USD20+ per rm
2. ur recommeded itnery for 5 days?
3. info on transport, guide, enterance fees?
4. any other u think i shd know..

1)choose ONLY the >3 star hotels preferbly 4 stars...
2) bring along $$$...casinos at the borders of cambodia and bangkok are :thumbsup: :devil:
3) visit the old ruins...entrance fee to ankor wat should be ard US$30-50 for 1 day...forgot...
jus my 2cents..

not sure if i can afford the >3stars hotel, damn budget..

no casino..this is purely a tour of angkor wat trips..hehe..and i cant afford casinos too..

but will keep the info on the entrance fees in mind..thanks!!
 

This is what i did when i went there

1. Stay at guest house.Less than USD10 a day. Plenty there. but do booking before u go through websites. yes they got email too.

2. Went over to smiley guesthouse to book driver+car. USD20 a day, Through them i also hired a tour guide for 3 days. (shld have stayed at smiley cause the environment better and pple more friendly)

3. needless to say i paid for a 3 day pass to Angkor Wat and all the other Angkors and all

before and after siem reap, i was at Phnom Penh. took their long n tortorous ferry to and fro
 

Here's what I did this Feb....

1)Stayed in Green Garden Village GH for $6 USD/room. (doubles with 2 single beds).No aircon,with attached bathroom.Very very friendly staff !

2)Paid for motor-cycle driver to get to Ang Kor Complex ($7 USD/day)

3)Paid for three day pass: $40 USD/3 days. (Bring your own photos)

4)Eat at the local market.($1-$1.50 USD/meal)

Bring lots of USD...........you can burnt your photos into CD if you ever run out of memory.

Have a fun trip!!!
 

wow! thanks for the help! hmm..will keep the 2 GH in mind..maybe i will check out smiley.. i got total 5 pple going so was hoping to get a driver cum guide with a mini bus or if cheap, 2 cars or 1 car for my friend and i can get a personal motorbike driver cum guide.

i intend to spend 5 whole days touring angkor wat so shd i get a 5days/1wk pass and pay more or can a 3days pass 'good' enuff to enable me to enter for 5/6days?

my using film slr so no CD burning for me..but i will pass the info to my friends..

From a photography viewpoint, besides the main temples of Angkor, Baphuon, Bayon, Ta Prohm etc, do not miss Banteay Srei - the pink sandstone used for this temple shows up great in photos, along with its intricate carvings. And also, try and catch the Bayon at dawn, as the morning mist starts to dissipate and the light catches the carved faces one by one.
 

Well,just to let you know...$7USD is for the motor-bike driver only.Basically,he drops you off outside the temple and wait for you to finish your "exploration",then brings you to another one.I would advise you to read up on Angkor Complex temples before going...you'll appreciate more and in control rather than allows your driver to bring you where they like...

You might need to pay more if you want a guide,but there will be many kids in the temples who are willing to be your guide if you pay them..you will be amazed by their English.....

I have no guide though.....only guidebook......but that's pretty sufficient...

I dont think there is a 5 days pass.....only 1 day/3 days/1 week.

1 week pass should cost $60USD....if I am not wrong......

By all means go for 1 week if you want,but 3 days should be enough to get you "templed" out.Dont spent all your time in the temples......spend some time going to the market area and walk around Siem Reap.Chat with the locals......it makes the trip more interesting.

Cambodia is not all about Angkor..........

If you can,please buy food for the kids but not give them money....
We dont know if they even get to keep the money.......
 

thanks for the more info. had some experiences in my 6wks thailand super budget trip and 1mth nepal trekking trip and i agree, give them pencils n papers is more meaningful than just sweets and money. money = greed n induce begging and sweets = bad teeth for them. always like to mingle with the locals and get to know the culture and see the real streets, rather than just the tourist sites. will keep all ponters in mind.
 

If you want to give the kids stuff, just be aware of the 'adults' who might be supervising them.. the kids work in syndicates. Alot of these kids are really sweet and friendly .. just dun buy what you dun need. My travelmate got screwed big time by a pre-teen girl when she tried to bargain too much and another got a free gift when he gave a kid a pen. So just play by ear.

I think its really worth paying for a guide. I felt it was money well spent. I wouldnt recommend u spending more than 3 days to the temples.


if you really want to be adventurous, then i suggest u hire a bicycle and go everywhere with that. Including the outskirts of Siem Reap... u'll take alot of pictures i gurrantee. But seems like only the ang mos do it tho.

my 6 hour ferry from Phnom Phenh nearly killed me tho. the ride was horrible and the boat was at 40 degrees tilt.. the ferries has a history of capsizing
 

hehe..just abit of extra info to anyone happen to read this thread, silkair having online promotion.. i am flying direct to siem reap on silkair at only $280SGD return tickets!!! think usually june peak will cost close to $700..quick quick join me there!!

hmm..ok, i will spend at least 3days there..then keep the other 2days+ KIV..i too lazy to cycle..esp will be carrying a daypack..hehe..but maybe i will do tt..thanks for info..

Transport can be settled over there. Bargain with motodop driver or moto drivers.

Hi,

Stayed at a 3 star (I think) hotel along the main road that leads into Siem Reap, sorry forgot the name of the hotel. It was a new hotel or renovated, at least the rooms were new and off course very very clean. Friendly staf.....in fact I can say all Cambodians are very very friendly! Rented a car and driver for USD 20 a day.

3-day pass is indeed USD 40 and you need all those three days to see most of the temples! Bring your own pics or let them make for you, let them earn some money lah! Also bring lots of 1 USD bills! Many items there are sold for 1-2 dollars....and they don't have change, hey, most of these are kids...difficult to say no when they ask you to buy from them :)

I was there about two years ago, or was it three???? Anyway, there was a heat wave and we were baking at 40+ degrees. If it is too hot stay inside the temple corridors......

I think the photo is FREE. No need to bring own photo. You can use your own photo if you want to.
 

No need to bring photos as they will take it for you and it is FREE. I mean, inclusive in the USD$40. You can even "make funny faces" as you take the pictures. Quite cool.
