Help needed for lens selection

Hi guys, need help with lens selection.
I'm totally new wif these. Wat's the diff btw 17-85mm and 28-105.
The oni thing I noe is the 17 and 28 figure refers to the wide diameter that's all.
Plz help Me thanx

meaning like 24-105mm can zoom futher than 17-85mm?

A focal lenght is just tat.. the length of the lens and how much angle of view it gives at a certain distance.
