Got a few read errors this morning, some files mysteriously disappeared while others become unreadable. Rebooted, the whole drive disappeared and disk manager under W2k saw it as 'free space'.

i've tried downloading a few data recovery tools (demo versions), but they all recognized the drive as 128GB - the drive is 200GB, and should be correctly recognized as '186GB'.

Anyone know of any good and reliable data recovery services locally? Thanx.

try file scavenger 2.1? it's supposed to even recover badly damaged hard disks. are you running NTFS on your other hard disk? try plugging it into another PC to see if you can recognise the hard disk. my old one had near similar problems. this occurred just before it died. try plugging into another pc with an OS that supports NTFS. if your hdd >3 years consider pulling data out and then replacing it with a new one (these days fluid bearing ones very cheap liao AND get extra coolers for your hdd. it'll thank you for it) :sweatsm:

Yep, my disks are all NTFS.

i've tried plugging it into another W2k machine. Same, appears as 'free space'.

The drive was bought in Jan this year, a 200GB WD.

i'd try file scavenger 2.1, thanx. Anyone else got helpful advice?

Use getdataback for NTFS. does a good job. best of luck.
