I been a user of Cannon and Nikon ..

so far i love both brand .

but over the years .
my camera broke down and i need to repair them .
but the repair price is alway sky high .

. Recently i buy a New digital Camera NIKON L4
is a great camera and i like it alot .
just 1 week after i got it , my younger brother got into a vespa accident . and the camera is damage .
but damage beyond repair . everything is ok besid ethe LCD is not displaying anything .

so i send it to Thailand Nikon for repair .
i got it for about $250
and guess what - there want $200 for repair .

MAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
being a end user . i felt that i am held hostage by the maker .
anyone out there know what i can do .
or any one who can fix my NIKON L4 at a better rate . my younge brotehr going back to singapore and i get him to bring the camera . anyone know where i can fix this at a reasonable price .

Gosh .. This is what i call a poor after sale service .

Just to clarify, is the camera still repairable or beyond repair??

There should be at least 1 year warranty for normal defects, but I think it does not cover defects due to accidents.

The camera is working .

Just the LCD screen have no display .
everything is fine even the flash is working .

i told somephoto recently with it . and still work fine .

so i assume the damage part is the LCD screen ..

but to ask for $200 to repair a $250 camera is just too much .

as a end user .. i felt that i am being cheated of my trust for the brand . and also held hostage by the maker .

i understand i am to be blame for the damage but the repair cost is just UNREASONABLE !!!

That's the problem with relatively cheap camera. At $250 (Singapore Nikon price is S$300 on Nikon website), when you need to repair, the cost of technician is expensive. Not to mention they may not stock the parts. And the LCD could be the most expensive component on your camera.

It might be better if you buy a new camera and use the old battery or old memory card as a spare.

The camera is working fine .
and need LCD replacment . or some kind ..
plus all this parts is never expensive -
if a MP4 player with 2 GB and 2" LCD storage can sell for $150 sgd
i don't see how a 2" LCd on a nikon camera can cost as much as 90 % of the COST to repair -

Anyone have any suggestion on how and where i can repair my L4 at a REASONABLE price .

IF i can i would want to find out more..
can't help being betary by the brand i trusted for years

if i am in amercia i would want to SUE nikon for this ..
betarying comsumer trust

As a Nikon user myself, I also find Nikon repair/servicing very expensive though Fuji is even more expensive.

I'm not defending the brand, but if you can fix the camera for less than $100, go ahead, open a service center. As one of the forumer pointed out, the labour cost to fix a cheap camera is just too high. Buying the cheapest color printer is even more heartbreaking. Every time the ink running out, I always feel it's cheaper to buy a new printer, since it usually comes with more free ink. Not to mention about servicing it when it broke.

Even if you are in US, if it's $200, it's still $200. Well, maybe it's USD200, since their technician is paid in USD. :bsmilie:

What is happening to the After sale service ..
Cheap as it may be ..

The camera is a Product of the Company who made it ..
is thier task to provide a repair service .

like cannon and Nikon . i had encounted this CRAZY rate of repair .

This is so unfair to User.

i wanna do something about it .
i am sure if i did Nikon would not want to lose it Repo for a Cheap camera like mine .. but before i do anything i would want to hear option and way to repair my camera cos my main focus is get the camera fixed .. $200 is cheap to some while some need to save to get one .

i am kinda sad that is damage . but to repair it at 90 % cost price . is like adding salt to my wound .

Think about this, the cost of repairing a camera is more than just the cost of the replacement parts. The repair cost would have factor in labour cost, the cost of the repair equipments/tools, indirect cost of the usage of the service center, etc etc. Also certain parts may not be easily available, and they may have to special order them.

If you find the repair cost too high, it may be better for you to purchase a new camera.

You can try bring those MP4 2GB and 2" LCD storage to their service center and ask the cost  .

FYI, there are many types of LCD (size, resolution, color, price). One you might think cheap on one device may not fit/suitable on another device.

that why i felt that i am being held hostage by the maker .

first i can't easily replace the LCD
then i got to pay any ransom price there ask for .

plus . technican get paid by the month . not on a single job .

and as the maker is their duty to carry parts .

Like many thing in this world and product .
i personally felt that this is a unfair and unreasonable way to deal with comsumer .

- and asking 90 % repair cost is even more unreasonable .
- if i can get my hand on the LCD i would want to repair it , myself .

anyone know how i can order L4 Part for my damage camera !!!!

Hope your brother is ok... the camera not worth repairing... i think that's what the service center is doing by giving that high price.

If you can easily replace the LCD, the price of camera may not $250.

then i got to pay any ransom price there ask for .
You can always say "No, I decide not to repair my camera...".

plus . technican get paid by the month . not on a single job .
I believe the cost of repair goes to Service Center administration department, not goes to technician pocket.

and as the maker is their duty to carry parts .
They do. So they already quote you the price (including cost of repair).

Well..., you can say that because you are not run a service center. Of course you can repair it yourself. You buy your camera, it is yours, no one will say you can't open it. But, it is Service Center right to reject servicing your camera if they found your camera has been opened by non-authorized Service Center.

First of all Thanks for the reply .

Yeh my brother is fine . he had a accident riding his vespa downhill and can;t brake in time at one of the mountian road in thailand . i stay in thailand now .

he went with a vespa team .. for some outing .

anyway back to topic .

i reject the repair cos the repair cost is too high .

SO .. if you go BUY a CAR . and when your car is damage -
and you need to change a Value or wire . and Honda or mitsubishi come telling you that would be 90% of your car cost
how would you feel ?

do anyone know where i can fix my L4 .
is still working fine with taking photo - but without display .

Buying a new camera does not slove my problem .

yes is a cheap camera but doe sthat mean the maker got the right to held me hostage .

anyone know Nikon direct e-mail . i wanna get some feedback .

I feel sorry for you but think about it this way

How much do you think it should cost ?

Lets give an example that the lcd screen cost only $50

How long do you think it will take to dismatle the damage screen ?

What will happen if upon removing the screen they found out that something else was also damage ?

Should they charge you for new part that was found damage ?

What will happen if after changing the screen and checking they found something else not working ?

If all this should happen how much should labour charges be priced ?

With all this said

I do feel that the repair cost is high (80%) of the camera cost

But if you to compare in car terms ,I would suggest a total loss.;)

YEs this camera is 1 week old .
Regardless of how old your cam is. With consumer electronics being so competitive and profits are razor thin. Now is the age of "use-and-discard".

An apt example would be if any person can repair the cam.. then the service center would not charge you too much labor fee. Which my guess should be about $60-$120 with the remanding cost going to the parts.

Don't forget even the parts have to be manufactured, delivered and stored...all these costs quite a lot.

The moral of this post is that.... be glad you've already got a very good deal buying the cam in the first place (the manufacturers could have easily charged you many times over if not for cut-throat competitions). Dun bother about repairing and complaining.
