hi everyone,

im interested in picking up DSLR photography for traveling shots..

however i am still learning about DSLR before i commit to spending $ to buy one...

have been reading some articles in clubsnap by sulhan on newbie photography.. find it very useful :)

hoping to get a DSLR..

i am interested in taking photos, night shots and especially non-grainy clear photos

what i want:

a. reasonably priced (not the most important factor)
b. something i can continue to use whilst in intermediate stage (i perhaps wont ever venture into professional)
c. good clear shots without noise, photos i can print in a4 size so i can display at my house
d. shoot clear shots in dim settings. impo: i also want to shoot in black and white.
e. size is not an issue.
f. live view (tiltable, responsive, what not) not a consideration at all
g. reasonably priced lenses support (not really too important, as i dont see myself splurging too much on lenses)
h. i don't need to shoot at high speed (sports)
i. movie if present, is a plus but not a need

always see some DSLRs on offer in courts, but usually the original prices of these models are marked up to fool public into think they are heavily discounted...

but anyways, a big hello!

btw i currently own a fujifilm z5..

cheers,
pew

Don't buy in mega stores like Courts, Best Denki or Havey Norman. Prices are pretty much at RRP there. Check out the price guides in the Price Guide subforum to see more down to earth prices.

Good Luck and Welcome!

Welcome to CS:cool:

If it's just for traveling... Consider a NEX-5. :)

hey bros, anyway im interested in buying a nikon d60 after reading about it in dpreview.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond60/

very high ratings. anyone have experience with nikon d60? seems reasonable at 800+ for a DSLR...

thanks :)

Nikon D60 Kit (18-55mm VR)
$840 (John, Mar09 - drawdeo) Tripod + 4GB
$860 (MS-O, Oct08 - Thanatos)
$880 (OP, Aug08 - doremonx) free 2GB SD, tripod, bag
$899 (CP, Aug08 - ziincx) free 4GB SD, tripod, lenspen, bag
$875 (CP-M, Oct08 - struggle) free 4GB, bag, tripod, cleaning kit
$860 (AP, Oct08 - GReddyZC76)
$860 (Lord's, Oct08 - GReddyZC76)
$800 (Grey?, OP, Oct08 - GReddyZC76)

D60 has been discontinued. Closest model to it is d3000. Best entry level model now canon eos 550D. If you really want nikon i suggest that you wait for d3100 thats to be released in a month or two.

If you really want d60 i'm sure there are still some in buy&sell forum...

Have you considered other brands such as canon, sony or pentax? The current go to model is the canon 550d as its the best in its class.

However for 800 i recommend you to get pentax k-x. Best high iso performance for the price.

Note that in their commemts they stated that 550D is the best in its class.

And you don't need 1.5k. You just need 1.1k. The 18-135 lens in the 1.5k kit is really a piece of crap.

For 800 dollars i would recommend you to get pentax k-x though

i really appreciate ur help, thanks a lot for patiently following up with my qns

lets say money aside,

do you think i can produce better pictures with some training with pentax k-x, canon 550d or nikon d60 (or the d60 replacement, if any) ?

thanks!!

With some knowledge and skills you can produce good results with any camera. In terms of specs .. there are tons of reviews.

550D comes with kit lens, similar to Pentax or Nikon. All three manufacturers have their line-up of lenses with some gems here and some lemons there. It will take a long time before you can distinguish lenses of different manufacturers by looking at the images. You should not be worried about that aspect. Focus on what you need (not what you want) and all 3 have their offerings.

Pentax K-x, an entry-level priced DSLR, has IQ and high ISO performance on par with mid-priced offerings from the other major brands. Making it one of the best value you can get for entry level DSLRs at the moment.

That said, a camera is just a tool, how good your pictures are largely depends on you.

Thanks people I've been reading quite a number of threads and decided on pentax kx hopefully kit 2 @ slrr will not be sold out anytime soon ;)

When I was there some days ago they had plenty of kit 2 packs on shelf.

Kit 2. Good choice. Just for the sake of adding to the mix, did anyone mention it has no visible af points? :bsmilie:

I'd still say the A500/550 are better. :)
