been trying to figure this one out for the last few hours without success..... google here and there also no help...... been a long week and brain is fried from work..... so I'm mathematically challenged tonight ha ha

I'm almost a nervous wreck and brain cannot take this torture any more......

question:

"My digital watch is showing 03:33 , How many times will my watch display 3 or more of the same number in a row over the course of a day?"

"My watch is on a 12-hour scale, not military time."

ps: For those who guess it correctly, i got a free gift for you.
and if you already know the answer, quiet ok? dont spoil the fun

trick question?
If a time like 01:00 also satisfies the "3 numbers in a row" criteria, then a lot leh... Tired also... cannot count! :)

basically it's 7 times (IMHO).
First, let's settle with 4 numbers in a row, we have:

1. 11:11
2. 00:00 (if this counts, but.. for analogue clocks, i presume they refer as 12.00AM?)

Then consider three numbers in a row:

3. 01:11
4. 02:22
5. 03:33
6. 04:44
7. 05:55
8. 10:00

Then it's analogue clock.. so.. probably you have to count twice the frequency. so.. should be 16 times (incl. of 00:00) or 14 times (excl. of 00:00).

Hope i'm right. Heh.

Hope its not a trick question, but since its a slow saturday...

00:00 x 1
00:01 x 1
00:02 x 1
00:03 x 1
00:04 x 1
00:05 x 1
00:06 x 1
00:07 x 1
00:08 x 1
00:09 x 1
01:11 x 2
02:22 x 2
03:33 x 2
04:44 x 2
05:55 x 2
10:00 x 2
11:10 x 2
11:11 x 2
11:13 x 2
11:14 x 2
11:15 x 2
11:16 x 2
11:17 x 2
11:18 x 2
11:19 x 2
12:22 x 1

41 times??

leezacch is very close, this is not militarty time, hence 0:00 is wrong.

abian, almost there. if you remove the 0:00, look closer.

12:22 x 1

41 times??

ahbian's arguments look very convincing !

But then again, since it's not military time.. means zeros in the hourly digit(s) are redundant
Probably it will be:

1. 12.22 AM
2. 1.11 AM
3. 2.22AM
4. 3.33AM
5. 4.44AM
6. 5.55AM
7. 10.00AM
8. 11.11AM

So to get frequency for one course day, multiply the frequency by 2, we will get 16. Haha, same as lightbrush

Even in my daily life, i am so used to setting by watch to 24 hour format, took me some time to think what midnight or 1 minute after midnight should be.

Whats that? Aiyah, I thought the prize is a watch.

I needed one. :bsmilie:

Will donate the prize back to you. You can create another question for others if you really want to give away. Sorry to make you go back to square one. :bsmilie:

you need to say ADJACENT and IN A ROW

for 01:00 not to count. :)

otherwise, on the same line = in the same row.

You want the prize right, tell us you want it desperately...

It's a aircon:)

Apart from counting, which bit of this question is really maths? :dunno:
It is more lateral thinking and english proficiency to me.
