Haida MC Slim Pro II Neutral Density (ND) filters

Neutral Density Filter is used to reduce the amount of light entering the lens. Think of it as a sunglass / shade which does the same effect by cutting out the light. ND filters are categorized by stops or shutter speed multiplier.
By doing so, you can achieve the following effects
1. Shoot at the largest aperture of your prime lens without reaching the maximum shutter speed limitation of your camera. This is typically done with ND0.6 (4x or 2 stops) or ND0.9 (8x or 3 stops) ND filter. E.g Using a Canon EF 50mm F1.4 @ F1.4 on a bright day would easily reach maximum shutter limitation, and cause overexposed shots.
2. Shoot “motion”. From silky waterfall , moving clouds on a bright day and sunrise/sunset, light trails of moving traffic.

A few features about the latest Haida Multi-coated Slim Pro II ND filters:
- Constructed with high quality Schott optical glass
- Minimum color cast even for ND3.0 10 stops.
Check out our photosphere flickr photostream here.
- 8 layers of multi-coat to reduce chance of flaring.
- Water & oil repellent
- Scratch resistant
- Slim profile to eliminate vignetting on ultra wide angle lenses
- Lightweight anodized aluminium ring
- Portable plastic box with soft foam, can be used to hold filters in the field. The foam helps to absorb moisture and slows down fungus growth.
- Multiplier factor imprinted on aluminium ring for easy reference

We will have 37-82mm sizes available in ND0.9, 1.8, 3.0 (3, 6 & 10 stop).

Here’s a table of Haida Neutral Density Filters’ Factors which are also printed on the filter ring for easy reference.

Neutral Density (factor) Exposure Adjustment
ND0.9 (8x) 3 stops, reduces light 87.5% or multiply shutter speed/time by 8x
ND1.8 (64x) 6 stops, reduces light 99.75% or multiply shutter speed/time by 64x
ND3.0 (1000x) 10 stops, reduces light 99.9% or multiply shutter speed/time by 1000x
All our ND filters comes with multiplier factor on the ring for easy reference!

Prices - We do encourage filter bundling (there’s a discount, buy more save more) so do check out other range of filters like UV, CPL. Working on our website at photospheresg.com, bundling will be available very soon.
The use of ND filters does need some trial and error and also experience. Hence in Photosphere we understand the need to show how the filters perform to convince customers, Photosphere will be holding regular sessions sunrise and sunset at convenient locations to demo our products.

Here at Photosphere we believe seeing is believing and certainly in photography this is an important aspect.

Here's an ongoing thread in talkphotography forum in UK that discusses about Haida ND filter. It was started in July 2011 and still going strong.

And here's a group on the ND3.0 10 stops filter on Flickr

And here's some humble shots of ours with Haida 3 stops ND0.9

Using it on a bright day with ND0.9 3 stops. With ND filter, it's possible to shoot in the bright condition at the largest aperture especially using fast primes.

Or even at night extend the exposure with ND0.9 to get some great effects like the boat trail. Stacked ND0.9 3 stops with CPL to remove some glare below.

Some humble shots with Haida 6 stops ND1.8

During the change of light just before sunrise, 6 stops ND1.8 is our preferred filter.

Here's some humble shots with Haida 10 stops ND3.0

6 shots panoramic stitch with Haida Slim Pro II ND3.0

This is a stacked Haida Slim Pro II 0.9+3.0, so a total of 13 stops. It was a really bright day.

This is an awesome shot JinG14! Thanks for joining with your friend and posting here, hope you are happy with the minimum color cast and quality of Haida ND filters. Maybe you can post on our gathering thread too & facebook too? Please like our facebook page:)

when is the next demo

Bought a set of three filters ( 3, 6 and 10 stops ).
I was testing the filters around noon on a sunny day with shutter speeds of up to 40 sec. There was no significant colour cast or sharpness loss despite stacking two filters ( 3 and 10 stops ).
The optical density of each filter is also accurate, that is, correct exposures could be made with the filter by using smartphone ND exposure apps or simply multiplying the shutter speed without the filter by the filtration factor number that is printed onto the filter frame itself.
Only small gripe is that the metallic ( aluminium ? ) screw thread material makes screwing on the filter at times fiddly and can be less then smooth if I am not careful, which I believe is usual in other non brass framed filters anyway.
I am very happy with the performance of these filters.
