For D40 I think only AFS lenses will autofocus. Other than that it should mount no problem, unless it's a really old lens.
i am not sure for D40, but for D100, D70/s, and D50, you cannot meter with those manual focus lenses, so much for the backward and forward "compatibility" of F-mount :bsmilie:

BTW, if you are using really old non-AI lens, better dont use on new bodies or it may cause mechanical damages
