"Profit is the realm of business, while unprofitable but socially useful tasks is the responsibility of government."

Some food for thoughts....

(1) Do you think the recent spotlight on private childcare being reported to be insufficient, inadequately managed and a few cases of abuses are timed so that the policy makers then can step in to open more childcares. Is the social responsibility of government one that should also recognize an opportunity to set guidelines and lead by example by being more involved in the business?

(2) What do you think of "Not-for-profit" hawker centers management? Do you think a government linked business can run on a not-for-profit business model that can have a socially beneficial task of controlling rents and prices.

But Singaporeans enjoy one of the highest living standards in Asia. You still not happy meh? :)

Do you honestly think that every Singaporean gets to enjoy all that high standard of living? Or are they crushed by that high standard of living to the point that they are barely living? The Singapore Govt has done a fine job trying to hide the extent of these problems, but you go live in the poorer estates in Singapore, you get to see what living within means really means.

In any case, a camera forum is hardly the place to ask such questions. If you can own a system camera, you are already above 50% of the income average.

Dear Master Sion, I am still trying hard to attain the living standard you have set for me but this is not possible in Singapore.

Singapore is a relative safe place to stay. This point I don't think anyone of us can denial. As for 1st world living standard, I don't think we are anywhere near yet. Most citizens are definitely not living in 1st world standard except for the top 10 %.

In 50 years, we have achieved much but we also squeeze a lot out from the people. Many did not enjoy the fruits but hope their generations to come will. We all hope more can be done for the people and the wealth better spread.

To our government's credit, the politicians have already given up on any pretense of achieving whatever high standard of living. Now they just promised to make Singapore a land of opportunity for everyone. Actually I salute Mr Goh because he dared to promise something. Now we only look forward to higher costs of living.

I would expect basic like health care, education, transportation, work life balance, etc to achieve those you see in Germany for example for citizens.

We are not that far in certain area but definitely have plenty of rooms for improvements. For example, waiting time for doctor in hospital with appointment can be more than 2-3 hours late.

... I utterly detest the notion of work life balance. Work life balance is not something one should even bother thinking about when he hasn't made it in life at all.

Not again ... CNY coming relax a bit lar.
So any BIG news coming on CNY eve?
