Cons digger.
Want to edit picture in the office but there isn't a licensed copy of PS?

fret not! Here is a free version very simliar to PS!

Presenting GIMP !!

Intsallation notes..

Download the first 2 files.. GTK+ 2.6.4 and GIMP.
I would recommend to download the help file as well but it's optional.

Install GTK+ FIRST then GIMP

You're ready to go! Needs a little getting used to the UI but by and large it should not affect your workflow. It has all the standard screen, multiply, dodge and burn..

:D

Cheers!

Gimp has been around for a very long time, but its user interface was designed by aliens with four hands and 35 fingers. Actually, there seems to be no coherent UI design at all. GIMP does what you want it to do, but by the time you edit a few photos, your patience will run out with the horrible UI.

There are other free alternatives. Here is one.

mm... it's not as bad as you mentioned lah.. but still a good alternative..
photofiltre isn't free lei.. GIMP is.. good thing about gimp is that they open different windows for each pic you open (something like MS word and PDF 7) what's so good about this? when 1 picture cause a crash.. the others are still ok :D

but for those who can afford PS CS  else GIMP is a poor man's PS

Thanks for sharing.

From the photofiltre website:

"PhotoFiltre is free for a private, non commercial or educational use (including non-profit organizations). In this case, registration is not necessary."

Another free photo editing software is:

PhotoPlus 6 by FreeSerifSoftware

Cheaper but not free alternatives to PS are:

1. Picture Window by Digital Light and Colour, standard version US$49.95, pro version US$89.95. Can get 30-day trial.

2. Microsoft Digital Image Suite 10, US$99. Pretty powerful features and comes with lots of templates for photo projects.

3. VCW VicMan's Photo Editor, standard version is free, pro version is US$49.95. They also have some other imaging tools such as red-eye remover and JPEG enhancer.

4. Ulead PhotoImpact, US$89.95. Can download free trial.

5. Jasc PaintShop Pro 9, US$129. Can try also.

wow.. looks like the real lobang king is here..hahahah

Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9 opens Photoshop files (*.psd), supports Photoshop's layers, uses Photoshop plugins, and supports a full scripting language, just like Photoshop. It is definitely targeted at 'replacing Photoshop'. Quite a good deal for 'budget Photoshop'.

Wow, this is good. I always support free software. Nice for you all to share.

BTW, We all know PS Elements is a cheaper stripped down alternative of PS full. Is there a summary of what is missing from Elements?
