Some friends recommend me NIKOn D40.

But overall is D40 the same as d40x.
choose which is better.?
Or got other recommendations to get an average DSLR camera.

If you are not shooting for a living, and intend to expand your interest in photography, you may want to consider a 2nd-hand D50 or D80. Or if you are the type who likes to tweak around in PhotoShop, then a D70 will work fine, cheaper too.

D40 has no internal focus motor. Therefore, lenses without focus motor will not be able to AF. If you can do with manual focus, then there will be no limitation.

Therefore for D40, the AF lenses are limited.

if you can find an old D70. get it, it is great as a first DSLR. not kidding light and very versatile.

the battery last forever and you can get very good shots using 6.1MP. :)
