Hello, i've been thinking of changing my D90 kit lens (18-105) but i'm slightly spoilt for choice.

I'm considering so far

Tamron 28-75 f/2.8
Sigma 28-70 f/2.8
Tokina 50-135 f/2.8
Tamron 28-105 f/2.8

I have a Tokina 11-16 UWA and for longer focal range i've nikon AF-D 75-240mm which is a surprisingly good lens.

Tamron 28-75 seems to be the best choice overall, the sigma is just slightly behind it.
Tokina 50-135 has a better range for walk abouts, better IQ.
Tamron is the best usable range, but it's very soft at f/2.8 and 82mm filter size...

I'm leaning towards the 28-105 or 50-135. But i'd like to get opinions.

There's also the 17-50 f/2.8 from tamron, but i'm not very interested in that range. although it has better IQ than all the above mentioned lens.

What do you guys thing?

And yes the best would probably be a Nikon 24-70 but no $$
Fx or Dx won't really matter that much. I don't mind the crop and when i'm upgrading i know what i want to get eventually ^.

Would get the 28-75 from your shortlist

Why not get an 18-250?

slow lens ler~ =x

looking for a f/2.8 constant

I own the one lens you are not interested in, the Tamron 17-50/2.8. IQ is extremely good and it is tack sharp. For street shooting I use an old Nikon AF Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6D. Yes I know it is not a 2.8 constant. But IQ is very good and it is extremely sharp, as sharp as the Tamron 17-50. It is, however, not that great for landscape photography due to the range on a crop sensor. For landscape I will use the T17-50.

I think i'll settle for a Nikon 35-70 f/2.8. let the hunt begin.

Yeah i know the tamron 17-50 f/2.8 has the best IQ, amongst all, but i very rarely shoot anything between 16-35mm range. For landscape i have a 11-16.

If got any more advice feel free to pour it all out. Cheers~

I've managed to get hold of a Nikon AF-D 35-70 f/2.8. today. I also tested the tamron 28-75. No fight la, 35-70 totally blows the tamron away. I didn't get to test the Sigma 24-70 HSM, but sigma offered to arrange a viewing at their base (at redhill). I'm interested to take a look how good it is, considering it won an award in europe for best lens 09/10.

Shall update as if i follow up.
And for those interested, there's a AF-D 35-70 f/2.8 in BnS now. Go check out, u won't regret it !!

Won't regret?? maybe! these hobbyist things have very strong individual preference, could be due to style, could be due to sifu's influence, could be due to friends influence, or maybe due to 'have not try enough of others experience'' limitation.... Best to one maybe not be good enough for others.

I wont use this unless my others are not avaliable. But if given free, most probably it will end in my dry box or in the BnS section. Again this sound I am belong to one of the groups I described!

the 35-70 from nikon is indeed a great lens.

and i myself like it, but i will use the 24-70 as well, i like it a little wider.

but if i'm trying to go all light, i'll still use the 18-55.

Nothing beats the convenience of an 18-200mm for a walkabout as the last thing you want to do is change lenses.
