help needed, my friend is thinking of getting the either one of the below camera, any commend or advice are welcome.

01. Panasonic FX7
02. Canon ixus40

If your friend can afford the FX7, go for it, it is overall a better digicam than the ixus40 but it is more expensive so in a way, they are not exactly in the same price category.

IMO, the image stabilisation of the FX7 really helps a lot to get sharper shots, an issue with small and light cameras, esp in low light situations such as indoors. Also, the Leica lens is noticeably better than the lens in the IXUS40 and you get almost no purple fringing in photos with high contrast, esp against the sky, unlike the Canon.

However, the IXUS40 is cheaper, operation is a little bit faster , slightly smaller and battery life is longer, so with these advantages, it is still an excellent buy for what one pays for.

Is the IXUS40 cheaper than FX7? The last time (1/2 months back) I check it is roughly the same.

Well, if you do not need the 5MP (99% you do not need anyway) and video recording with sound (video option is a joke as you cannot zoom or focus at all), I rather you get the FX2.

Agree with theITguy. I would get the Panasonic over the Canon - cheaper and better features. But I wouldn't pay an extra $100+ for 5MP over 4MP. 5MP is only about 10% increase in the number of linear pixels compared to 4MP.

So, bottom line, I would get the FX2. It was going for $535 inc GST from Alan Photo Sim Lim when I got it last month.

Go for FX7 if you can pay a little more.

1) You will never know when you need that extra 1MP for cropping
or big print. So its best if you have it than dun have it when you
need it.

2) 2.5" screen is still better than a 2" screen although resolution
is not high. Coz damn shiok to look at big big screen. See to believe !

3) More colors to choose from for FX7 apart from the usual dull
and plain silver color. The other colors are all very nice and simply
irresistible. Again see to believe !

I dun earn anything from Panasonic, just a happy FX7 owner ;)

Batt life is poor but an extra batt help to solve the problem
for me. As for OIS, it works for me since I tend to have shaky
hands when handling such a small and light camera.

Most ladies simply can't resist the look of the multi-color FX7, most of
my lady friends just went straight to the camera shop and demanded
the FX7 after I've brought the little cutie out with them once. Now
we have all 4 colors of FX7 flashing here and there within my small group
of friends.

the battery lifespan of FX7 with flash ON:
120pics without OIS
60pics with OIS

On top battery, it makes up a good camera. Just get extra battery will do. 1 vote goes for FX 7

I guess that is the bane....batt life...extra batt should do it ..btw, how much is another batt?

surprising I have one fren who is choosing between the two.
I suggested to her to get the FX7 since I am using a FZ20.
haha..

FX7 cost about $630, while the Canon is $550 or so.

yeah... the FX7 is a good cam, just be careful of using the high ISO settings.

Got the 3rd party batt from AP at $22. As for the original one, they quoted
me $60

eh, suggest u go to Funan center to search under eastgear batteries.
AP camera price is reasonable, but their 3rd party stuff be careful.

er...my 3rd party batt so far so good...touch wood wood wood wood ;)

For those who are keen to get a FX7, IT show selling $749 and comes
with lots of freebies. Got 512mb SD card, batt, case, mini tripod, 3
yrs warranty (1 yr from Panasonic, 2 yrs from Harvey Norman)
Quite a good deal IMO.

How come on the IT Show both priced much higher than what you quoted above  Even the Canon IXUS 30 is priced around $550

I guess the price given by bwilly is just normal camera shop price
with lesser freebies. Dealers always sell at RRP on IT Shows/PC shows with
more freebies ;)
