Japan had its first aircraft carrier Hōshō in 1922.

This is the FIRST time that a plane can take off from; and land on a PRC aircraft carrier in 2012.
It is grandly reported.

But isn't a plane expected to be able to fly from and land on a carrier?

It is like celebrating that our camera can actually take a photo. Is that not what it is supposed to be able to do?

Note that:
• the whole carrier deck is empty for ONE plane to land on.
• the sea is calm and not pitching in rough ocean waves.
• it is bright daylight and not at night.

In other words, the carrier is not combat operationally ready yet, in terms of hardware and personnel.

It is very far behind the Nimitz class carriers.

ever wondered why idiots always go "FIRST FIRST FIRST!!!" on idiot posts?

Well, they make a big fuss out of it because they are using it to intimidate the neighboring countries they are stealing land from using their "9 dash map". It's basic saber-rattling.

they making a big fuss because it was made in china ! will explode or not? must ask jackie chan.

It was made in Russia.

Heh. The J15 is a copy of the Su-27

Sometimes or rather most times, the so called 'fuss' comes from the observers. The observers were vary of such developments and make lots of noises. It is correctly stated that Japan has their carrier long time ago. So why the west are so worried when China try to purchase an old carrier from Russia?

The sad thing is that the world is spending lots of $ and resources on military rather than improvement for society. Hope that in years to come, such "investment" can be apply to help mankind rather than war.

operationally ready or not ..... once they park it near Senkaku island, Spratleys, Straits of Malacca or Mischief Reef .... I dont think we will find it that amusing anymore

it would make a great artificial reef and wreck dive spot

It is about the technical ability.

It is easy to talk about landing on aircraft carrier but technically not easy to do because the air craft and the carrier are both moving.

There are waves that rock the carrier side to side, which added to the difficulties.

That is why many countries do not have any aircraft carrier like the USA.

Actually J-15 was a copy of Russian’s Su-33. Su-33 was based on Su-27 with the main difference being the fuselage was strengthened so as to prevent the aircraft from being ripped apart from being caught by the arrestor wires on the Carrier.
The copy of Su-27 was designated as J-11 and J-11B is the improved version of the J-11 which was hailed as being almost as good or better than earlier versions of US F-15.

Ah, there you go, thanks! I still love the sukhoi 37 with the vector-thrust capabilities

I like their T-50 though. Better engines (with supercruise capability and thrust vectoring too), stealth capability and look like an alien aircraft... very futuristic. In comparism, Chinese J-20 look so ugly and with the stupid front canard which will confirm had an impact on its stealth capability regardless of what the Chinese netizens are saying.

Actually you cannot compare the China aircraft carrier with the Nimitz class carriers. It would be like comparing a 7D with a 1DX...

The China aircraft carrier is approximately 57000tons in weigh and the Nimitz is more than 75000ton. The nearest China's carrier to be compared to is the Russian's Kuznetsov class carrier (from which China’s aircraft carrier are built from).

Although with that... the proud Chinese netizen already think they have the strongest navy in the world (hahahaha)

I agree fully with ed9119. This is not about whether the Chinese aircraft carrier is superior or not.

It's about whether you can sleep easier. :bsmilie:

US has 11 operational carriers and most have N capability

It is like a photographer shooting a xmm when both of them are moving and rocking from side to side? :)

About the ski jump end of the carrier. Seems the British invented this. But the US did not follow. Probably for good reasons.
With the ski jump, the planes can only land from one side.
Heavily laden planes with full load of munitions cannot take off from the ski jump.

Looks like the ski jump is not universally accepted as a better design for carriers.

So what happens when a pilot used to taking off from a ski jump carrier, has to take off from a carrier with a flat carrier deck?

The report said PRC is now developing their own carriers. Let's see what their naval architects come up with.
Anyway they have to. Buying obsolete second hand carriers is not a viable long term solution.

arrestor and tail hook . to bring aircraft from 200 knots to zero.

catapult. to undo above. and the power involved in doing so.

apparently a Chinese engineer was so excited he died of heart attack. rest in peace .

China has to start from somewhere and what we are seeing is the awakening of a sleeping dragon.

Many years ago, western intel were dismissing Imperial Japan Army capabilities, look what happens.
