Free Noise Reduction Software....

Maybe some one can start a thread to Poll the type of noise reduction software used.
Also can let us know if its free & limitations of the free software.

Yeah! Its pretty nifty and its free!

Think its quite comparable to those you pay for. Only this is that the free version only does 8bit. So... this should be the last step in your workflow.

Ok, so i need a little help in this ...

Currently my workflow is
1. Convert RAW to JPG with no sharpening, aRGB color space
2. Crop in PS-CS to 1800x1200@300dpi for 4R size
3. Apply USM

Where does the NR step come in - before or after USM?

Hmmm.. I would place the NR before USM.
USM will actually increase noise.
Also USM is not affected by 8bit images.

So in your case using the free noise reduction which only handles 8bit:
1. Convert RAW to JPG with no sharpening, aRGB color space - 16bit
2. Crop in PS-CS to 1800x1200@300dpi for 4R size - 16bit
3. Convert to 8bit
4. NR 8bit
5. Apply USM 8bit

If the NR software can handle 16 bit:
1. Convert RAW to JPG with no sharpening, aRGB color space - 16bit
2. Crop in PS-CS to 1800x1200@300dpi for 4R size - 16bit
3. NR 16bit
4. Apply USM 16bit

This is a bit contradictory - if USM increase noise, wouldn't it be better to run NR after USM?

ahem ... if i am not mistaken ... JPEG only support 8-bit color depth ... only TIFF allows 16-bit ;)

No. The reason is this.... if you USM first... You would have introduced new noise data from USM. And USM will emphasis the noise already there. Remember that USM really increase contrast of adjacent pixels thro some algorithm, theoretically. This means that the noise would be enhanced. Then the NR would have to denoise the inherent noise plus new noise from USM.

If you NR first, you'd have a cleaner image to do USM.

You can try this out and see the diff. If you USM a noisey image, it becomes even more noisier. ;)

3. NR 16bit
