Hello friends,

Below are two pictures taken yesterday (5th Aug) while I was having coffee at the cafe outside of Orchard Cathay Cineplex. I was observing this security guards eyeing these 3 SCGS girls who were walking outside the complex hoping to collect some donations for a flag day.

Though in time by which we do questions whether this donations are going to a good cause, I will respectfully donate nor ignore such donation on a personal merit. These students are there volunteering their services, why should they be victims?

Upon seeing these 3 girls walking outside the complex, I saw the security guard approach them and asking them to leave the premises. Come on, lets not target those who sincerely like to help the needed cause, if we have problems with the organisation itself, just don't donate, but why make these volunteers the victim? And they are not even inside the building.

I don't see how the girls are victims in any ways. They are just asked to leave perhaps. Tv donations is one thing. If we don't like the show, we can just switch it off. But, street donations is really getting irritating, we often have people coming up to you when you are walking in a hurry to get to places. Donating is the easy part, it is the hassle of taking out the money and having my flow of movement disrupted along the streets. Some more when it is kind, sweet, innocent school girls asking for donations, felt kinda guilty not responding to them. ;p

if they have breached the rules of collecting donations by going into private commercial properties, the guard has all the rights to chase them away. i've met a group of school girls who tried to collect doantions on a bus, what do you think? they know their rules, they've been briefed by the school before coming out to collect donations, they ought to know what they can/cannot do.

The girls are only volunteers...the guard is only doing his job.
In my opinion, I think there are really too many of such collections. It's like human ERP. But its ok if the volunteers do not stand in the way of pedestrains.

Yes, but the big question is how well does one know his job exactly?

The girls were outside the premises of the building (unless there is a demarkation boundary around the building like, "This point onwards is earmarked as private property"). They have the right to solicit donations outside the building. Whilst they can still enter the building with their tin cans, they cannot and must not solicit donations from anyone with their tin cans when they are within the building compounds (damn, do they need security escort? hehehe...)

Unfortunately, we had seen double-standards once too many. How often have you been enjoying your lunch/dinner and someone walks past you, places a figurine or a toy with the sign attached, "Hello! I am deaf. This toy costs $5..."

I believe that unless authorised by building management, with a license, one is not allowed to solicit donations or sell any things within a private commercial property.

Many a times, I'd seen security guards turn a blind eye to such cases.

So, how many security guards can really claim, "I'm just doing my job." when its obvious that most have double-standards?

the property line of the commercial building extends beyond the building, that's why you see streetside cafes being introduced outside the building yet remains rentable space owned by the developer/building owner. moreover i sense that the girls may have gone too close to the entrance of the building or tried to ask for donations from people at the al fresco cafe.

ADD: judging from the first picture, the girls are indeed stepping on private property. they are also most probably within the al fresco dining area.

Hmm? I thought it had always been the case where a teacher is usually arrowed to do such rubbish like being a 'charity coordinator' and his/her form class would usually gets whatever's coming?

Went twice for fund-raising stuff of this kind when I was younger. I was horrified when a guy, wearing singlet, shorts, slippers walked up to me and dropped a $50 note and slipped away. I gawked like an idiot for 5 whole minutes.

Well, if you stop donating to NKF from your GIRO/Credit deduction. You may want to give a few cent to 1 or a couple of $$ to them if you want.;p

it's no longer a may or may not, the students are stepping on private property based on the first picture.

depending on the permits. some of them do have permits. we cannot blame the security personnel in this instance, this school flag day thing is becoming a social problem in Singapore, it's a complicated issue. small charitable organisations are usually more controlled in their behaviour and it's definitely easier to allow a small group of 3 or 4 inside the premise than a whole cohort of students.

i dun think they are volunteers...most students are forced to do it...coz it's COMPULSORY.

Also...collecting donations near departmental stores and shopping centers is not the right thing to do. Imagine you have a shop, and they stand in the area outside your shop...everybody will be detouring....human nature. Of coz then u be angry too, no business. lol

Yeah, they buy the land to build their building on, not just the building. So they do have ownership of the land, at least up to the pedestrian walkway.

It's not ECA, it's considered community work. I think/remember the students have to contribute to a certain number of hours a year.

during my time, or shortly after tat, the purpose is to collect enough 'points' to go JC or Uni... very hypocrite imho...

anyway i was 'asked' to do this tin can thing once when i got my detention... its not my will to do it anyway... in the end i filled 2 tins... hehehehehe... cos i bring 2 pocket full of coins b4 i begin, den went to fill it up, den went back, instead of letting me go, they gave me another can... so lppl, went to do another round... den alot of aunties & jie jie donate to me... i receive some 10 bucks but ask them to put 1 dollar coins instead... ;p
