For this lens, the problem root-cause is the loose felt cloth from the focusing ring

Some felt cloth got entangled with the SWM mechanism

If you noticed that the focusing ring suddenly became loose, it would be best to get your lens checked

So I presume they use the felt to Dampen the focus ring ?

Shame its not like old school AI-S / or Zeiss ZF/ZF.2 lenses that rely on oils and precision metal alloy machining to offer the resistance I believe? ( can only dream... :) )

Just a trade off I guess. These modern lenses has to be light and fast. And with stiff competition, manufacturers have to save cost in parts.

What's important is to know the symptoms of a loose felt from the focusing ring.
Once the felt got stuck in the SWM mechanism, the circuitry that drives the motor could be fried if the owner still continue to use the lens
