Hi guys, really need your help on my first self drive holiday in Hokkaido during summer time ... I have been researching on the places to visit ... but there are just so many and I dunno which are really worth visiting ... so if anyone of you here have had a self drive experience in Hokkaido during summertime, please offer me some recommendations... thanks!!!

I am planning to go in mid July ... is that the best time to see the most flowers? I hope to drive to scenic places with lots of flower fields and along the coastal line .... does anyone have any suggestions or have a tried and tested itininary that you can share with me?

If you know of any cheap and good accommodations, must try eateries, cheap domestic flight from tokyo to hokkaido etc please share with me... I have found some on google, but not sure if these are the cheapest or are there any really good deals that you guys know of ...

thanks in advance!

I went on a driving holiday with the AA Singapore- who seconded the trip arrangements out to Prime Travel

They did a truly excellent job.

UOB Travel Planners also does a fly-drive package.

I was very impressed with Prime's service- they had a Japanese staff member (Matsuki-san) who went with us and helped a lot. You should contact him and see if he can arrange a good package for you.

I blogged about the drive here-

Hi there, thanks so much for the links and your interesting blog! Really nice photos on your facebook as well!

May I ask how much is the package per pax for the fly+drive in Hokkaido? Is it cheaper to get Prime to plan for us or is it cheaper if we DIY ourselves?

Thanks alot for your help!

It'll will cost more via Prime I guess but the extra support is invaluable. No harm checking out their packages (and UOB's) then see how much it is to put it all together yourself.

I went in 2008 when the Yen to SIN$ exchange rate was better. Think my package cost $3200 per pax (but get this, there was a $600 fuel surcharge!).
I extended the trip to visit Tokyo so all in I think it was close to $4K for each adult.
I have only now saved enough to think of going to Japan again (next month)!

I just looked at the packages on Prime's site

Looks like nothing has been put up for the summer yet. Best thing to do is call them.

Hi,

The $4K included many of the meals during the trip... and the car rental and petrol.

Kawaguchiko (Mt Fuji area- 5 lakes), Osaka (with day trips to Kyoto, Nara, Kobe)... will be meeting my old Univ classmate in Kobe.

Remember to ask for Matsuki-san when you call Prime. Tell him Dr Ho from the AA trip in 2008 recommended him (he should remember me- I was the only one with a 2 yr old on that trip).
