for a 1.6x crop cam like the 40D, 28-135mm translates to roughly 44.8 - 216mm, which offers rather gd tele range, but lacking in the wide angle side.

i would say go for the kit lens as starters. the focal length is more practical on the apsc cameras unless u are very sure u dun shoot wide.

yep, like the 18-55 IS or the 17-85 IS USM are gd lenses to start with.
