I'm thinking of getting the 40D.
Will the lens EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM a good companion for this??

hi, new CS member here. also using the 40D :D

for a 1.6x crop cam like the 40D, 28-135mm translates to roughly 44.8 - 216mm, which offers rather gd tele range, but lacking in the wide angle side.
