Firing a mortar on yourself? i.e. vertically 90 degrees up so it lands on yourself

Sounds more like a misfire or friendly fire.

How can this happen? Maybe lack of training in using the weapon or lack of understanding of how the mortar works.
Maybe they thought it is like any other "cruise" missile that will fly off and guided towards the enemy.

welllllllllllllllll......

ahahhahaha.

sounds like a really bad idea to let inexperienced ppl play with things tat explode

It could be the propellant charge in the round was defective, so after firing it just popped out of the tube and landed at their feet and detonated.

Misfire happen all the time even in the SAF where countless servicemen have been killed (e.g. 2 NSFs from the 23rd Battalion, Singapore Artillery was killed when a 155mm HE shell exploded unexpectedly during Exercise Thunder Warrior 1997). They can be the most skillfill gunners in the entire world but it is for all for naught when manufacturers themself do not take safety seriously.

By design, most fuzes have a minimum arming distance so the scenario that you had described does not happen.

Maybe firing from a trench or sandbagged fortification and the mortar hit the trench/fortification wall?
The arming distance probably set real short, not working at all or don't have.

From the CNN news article
The incident occurred when the soldiers were traveling in a convoy of three vehicles

Now we know 1 more reason why USA Navy Seals did not want to inform Paki (who would have insisted to include their own troops) about raid on Osama.

Just to add, during Asian Aerospace 1984 a 67mm live anti-tank projectile was left in a Armbrust anti-tank weapon on display at the ST Kinetics booth.

Some visitor happened to pull the trigger with the resulting backblast killing a 21 year old men standing directly behind the Armbrust, the 67mm anti-tank projectile flew through the exhibition hall and out of the wall to some 300 meters away and failed to arm.
