Can someone give me a quick education on filters?

I have a 77mm CPL and ND4 and of course the normal UV ones.

What does CPL and ND4 do?
CPL is to take the sun so that it will not be so glaring?

ND4 is to cut down by 4 stops? So as to take through glass?

What about GND?

If I got a high contrast scene and I don't want to do bracketing (lazy), do I need to use GND?

Have you done any basic research? Your question is covered about 50x here on CS, and about 200x all over the web. Please try a search on google for "photographic filters" and read up a bit.

difficult to give you a quick education on filters, I'm afraid...

as an initial step, try to google for the different terms 'CPL filter', 'GND filter', 'ND4 filter' and see what you get.
After reading them you should have some idea...

And ND8 is 3 stops. Its call ND8 because 2^3 = 8 and your exposures need to be 8 times as long.

Get the size of the filter that corresponds with your lens diameter. (not the focal length)

The filter thread size is on the front of the lens.

I did google but different sites use different terms ... like polarisers = CPL??? ND = ND4/ND8 or GND??? So got confused.

You're almost there. It's almost the other way around.
CPL allow you to take through glass at a certain angle.
ND4 cut down by 2 stops - in a way, if the sun is bright and glaring, you can use the ND4 to dim it.
Don't think bracketing will help with a high contrast scene, depending on the scene, a GND would be useful.

TS I think u need to take a step back... clam down n not fall into the buy buy buy syndrom.. u seem to be wanting to buy all these diff filters w/o even knowing why and how to use them and what to get. just don't worry so much abt filters first and start shooting more. ND, GND, CPL filters are not filters that u'd use everyday unless u really specialise in certain types of photography

That's rather for the expensive CPL filters. Usually, UV filters are purchased per lens in the respective size.
