I'm using B+W for my DA*300. It cost abt $80+
So far this is the only filter I use for my lens. Other lenses I don't put filter.

small price to pay compared to the cost of the DA*300 :bsmilie:

TS, alternative is to use metal lens hood.

as with all things, its a simple cost/benefit analysis... buying B+W filter for 18-55 kit lens may not be worthwhile.

but not protecting a Star lens properly is short-sighted.

there are more affordable filters that do not degrade IQ that much... hoya UV, kenko protector, marumi WPC for example. i mainly use kenko and marumi.

just don't get the cheap $10 filters. i had one that caused very bad reflection under bright lights. :thumbsd:

i think the filter only protect the front element of a lens. for proper protection you must not do the followings:-

  • use with other brand body
  • use in harsh environment
  • keep in high humidity environment
  • drop it

for extra protection you can buy insurance or like me keep it in the cabinet all the time like my FA31 :bsmilie:

Go to Orient Photo at SLS 6th floor. Look for Stanley . . . or go to the Mass Order thread to buy . . .

I find some of the Hoya filters very smudge-prone and hard to clean. But they have so many different grades, haven't tried all of them before. One american salesman actually showed me on the spot how he cleaned a Hoya filter without leaving any smudge with just a lens cloth, so clearly the different grades of Hoya filters do vary.

My DA*16-50 has a Kenko Pro-1 Digital UV over it, and I'm using either that or B+W for most of my lenses.
