Film SLR dying.... sad...

Fellow Clubsnappers,

I think it is quite sad that recently, all SLR release are Digital and no more new film body coming out at all..... I am familar with Canon, but do not recall seeing any new SLR body release even from Nikon and other brand either....

Just feel that it is a bit sad to a certain extend, as I still believe that there is still a market for film SLR...

It will be a market segment that is much more expensive, exclusive.... personnally, still prefer those films and shooting slides.... more.. though I have digital pns... still think SLR film is much more fun.....

Also, I think digital is improving in the image area.... but sometimes, I just feel that when you shoot digital, it is no longer art.. more like mass production, and selecting the better ones... when shooting film, more focus, concentration... much more challenging...

Digital make photography look so easy at times, I think most just photo shop this and that image..... crop it and look nice....

Basically, I shot with DSLR before and SLR... and still prefer SLR better..... I enjoy those challenges and the "RISK Factor".... Just my personal opinion, and sad that SLR film is dying slowly.......

There was the F6, released not too long ago.

Snap up an F5 or an F100 for cheap, and go run through a few rolls of velvia 50s.... you'll see why there's still a market for film/chrome, if not in singapore, elsewhere in the world. :thumbsup:

I have been a user of Minolta Dynax 700si for some years liao. also prefer to take slides more than anything. but with the tech ever advancing, now thinking of getting a DSLR, esp so when its so much easier to upload a pic, rather than scanning. still thinking which DSLR to buy.....KM 7D or Sony A100, since my current lenses are able to use on both.

Sad to agree but its true. A recent trip to my regular photo store puts me aback that there are a lot of films accessories not coming in anymore. That is on top of many other less popular brands that are already being replaced by digital stuffs.

Juz like u, I would like to shoot film for at least for a couple more years before a decent digital SLR would come in with a good price. Nikon did came out with a higher film model which I'm tempted, despite the fact that I'm holding to a Canon 1v. I would definitely lean towards Nikon for this well appreciated act but Canon seems to be too profit-driven, market oriented to speed too far ahead without any thoughts for the film market who supported and groomed them into what they are today.

Competition, technology and a capitalist market will only take care of the majority and ironically it is usually the minority that are the 1 standing out.

I've used digital SLR before, but decide to sell it after less than 2 months of use. But I do appreciate its uses where film can't.

The best would of course to have a shop to continue specialising selling films and provide items that are for films photography. And hopefully these makers do not go bust and can tide through the digital conversion where obviously the $$$ are not rolling into their pocket....not at least for a couple more years.

F6.... problem is I am a canon user, and I do not like to switch system..... I have shot slides, and I am still in love with all the SLIDES I shot.... I am trying to bulit up my own range of lens too... still trying to get some more lenses... now, I lean towards a prime shooter... prefer shooting with big F for prime lense....

For now, Digital can never take that joy away from me yet.... when shooting slides....

Will I go digital?? I am a stubborn guy... most prob... a very late adopter, and get a set DSLR later.... but would hope that this niche market will live on...... film SLR... it is already dying and many does feel sad too........

You'd be surprised that there are quite a few film manufacturing companies out there still making film. And they won't be going out of business anytime soon. In fact they'd probably ramp up production should Fuji and Kodak go out of business.

Small boutique outfits like Ferrania, Maco and Efke are still in business and seem to be doing well:

Lucky film has also taken over production of Kodak film in China. So film will still be around for a long while.

New film cameras on the other hand maybe harder to acquire, but the used market is innundated with them and should keep film buffs happy for a few decades.

The problem (as time passes) might be the lack of good service men to service them, as the oldies die out, there will be less and less skilled individuals to fix these aging cameras. So if you there is a film body that you like to use, stock up on a few now since they have become so cheap due to the digital revolution.

I understand yr opinions and feelings. I've recently made the transition from SLR to DSLR and i still prefer the quality of slides over digital. Digital pics just can't rival the slide film.

Sadly, Nikon F6 is the last development of Nikon Flim Camera,

I think it wil probably be the last professional Flim SLR for 35mm format.

Of course, if its not because of DSLR, i think the SLR market today would still be nich as well.

Medium Format might have gotton in a strong foothold as well.

Hee hee... that is the only advantage.... for me, I was hoping canon have a new ettl2 SLR for their EOS 1/3/30/33 series. I would just get that and be happy... currently, ettl2 is with 300X body only....

Actually if you enjoy photography and good at it, there is not much difference what you use. You still able to produce with what you have on hand at the moment. Anyone can't produce when using P&S or film/manual camera? Why? The gear should not matter that much.

if im not mistaken, i thought the EOS33 is ETTL2.

EOS 30/33 is ETTL. EOS 30V/33V is ETTL II.

:thumbsup: Thats the way! But i guess digital has an advantage in terms of uploading of pic, easy storage. Have taken quite a no of slides but have problem scanning them and upload. any suggestion?

Use better slides film. (Sorry, slides have a tendency of having difficult scanning)

Nothing about advantages here because different media have different advantages. Some advantages are disadvantages and other disadvantages are advantages to other group of user. Most important thing is peer pressure. I think many of these situation are mainly peer pressure and nothing to do with their decision. If it is personal choice, the question should not been ask in the first place since he will choose what he like then

I still use film and infact I enjoy so much I have started to became kind of a collector. With the money, I could easily purchase a few DSLR and even 2 new DSLR every month if I want so is purely personal choice and joy.
