Anybody knows whether can I get the above items in Singapore? Will be doing some travelling hence minimise the exposure of the film from X-Ray.

TIA.

My simple advise to you is to forget these film pouches.

Anything less than ISO 400 will not suffer from repeated "x-ray" examinations by the airport machines.

If you have say an ISO 800oir higher films, then ask for a hand examination.

I am more concern with those third world / undeveloped countries. :)

Which "third world"/"undeveloped" countries are you talking about?

Countires like Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar etc....

1 Directly relating to your question. Do not worry about your films. The airport scans are safe for your negatives.

2 Nothing to do with your question. Terms like "Third world" and "Undeveloped" are better not used - my opinion only.

Thought always see these terms from newspaper :) . Anyway tks for hightlighting. :) Maybe "developing countries" will be a better term.

Just leave the film in the film canisters and have them hand check the film.

Just FYI, each time you run your film through the x-ray machine it is being exposed to the gamma rays. If you only run it through once that is fine. How many times are they going to x-ray your film through out your trip? Once leaving Singapore, possibly on arrival at your destination(?), another time departing from you destination, again possibly one more time upon arrival?,...etc.

I hope you see what I am trying to get at? Just tell the airport to hand check the film, you are a professional photographer shooting on assignment, insist on it.

It is just like exposing film, underexposing the film, 10 x, eventually it will all add up.

I had my films, both roll and sheet films (B&W - like TriX) x-rayed more than 10 times in my last trip to Europe. I did not see any problem with my negatives. If the x-rays caused some problem, it is, to my mind, of no conseuqence. And I am not talking about a paltry number of films.

If you want to insist on hand check, prepare

1 To be public enemy #1 to those fellow passengers behind you.

2 To be rudely told off by airport staff.

Just take out all the film(s) and hand over to the custom for hand checking while u dump your bag onto the machine.

That might be an exception but just for the sake of humoring me. You might want to check out this website.

1 That was not an exception. I do it all the time!

2 I did try to humor you, and is in turn, humoured by you.

That website was talking about "CHECKED ITEMS'. Perhaps I was not clear. I was talking about "HAND-CARRIED" films.

Never put films together with the checked-in items. The website was right about the powerful x-rays for checked in luggage.

But we are talking about hand-carried stuff. Are we not? Even you wrote "have them hand check the film".

So, in future, if you wish to substantiate your position by quoting "authorities", please read them first.

3 But let me give some comments about this "authority"/website which you quoted.

The first paragraph talked about CHECKED LUGGAGE. Then he talked about the sign over the X-ray machine that says "FIlm safe"/"This Machine will not harm film"

What trash! Have anyone seen such signs in the X-ray machines that are used for the checked luggage? Have anyone (OK, I am talking about ordinary passengers like you and me) seen these machines? This writer have absolutely no idea what he was talking about! Those machines we see when we pass through customs are used for hand luggage, not checked luggage!

Sheesh!

Be careful about "authorities". Many of them spewed trash!

And please, avoid trash. Not very healthy for the body, and mind.

I hv been to China and had actually requested my film to be hand inspected without any problems. They opened up all the boxes.

I raised this question is bcos I just want to ensure my film are safe and at the same time not causing any inconvenience to the custom and those who are in the queue. :embrass:

Appreciate all the feedback given by fellow CSers but any idea where can I get these pouches/bags/cases?

It is fine with me if you still want to discuss film safe issue at airport in this thread. :) You are most welcome.

This is precisely what I wrote in post #9. By insisting on handcheck, unless there is no people behind you, you will always cause delay.

And for what purpose? To cater to your paranoia.

Here are just a few things I have found.

I see your point, and as I have said, that might have been an exception rather than the rule. But then again, I wouldn't want to take that kind of chance if I was travelling on a job only to have the film ruined by x-ray. I wouldn't know how to explain that to my client, potentially lose the client asked to pay for all costs to have it reshot, not to mention the nightmare it would be to reschedule to have it redone. I think "caution would be the better part of valor".

That's just my 2 cents.

I have been through the "caution" part. I have little necessity for "valor".

I have now decided that an obsessive neurotic paranoic state is totally unnecessary, especially coming from a person who does assignments and therefore a "professional".

Sigh!

Go to Cathay Photo

Whoa!!! I am just giving my opinion. I'm feeling that you are making a personal attack here if not being rather aggressive towards me just stating my opinion and experience.

Granted you have more posts than I have but there is no need for this. Aren't we all entitled to our own opinions? There are, excuse the pun, "more ways to skin a cat". I do not deny or discount your experiences and how can you totally discount mine, maybe you were lucky with your experiences. Good for you!

And by the way aren't most photographers, be it professional or not "obsessive neurotic paranoic" in some shape or form? Whether we are willing to admit it or not? I am sure you are. Maybe my "obsessive neurotic paranoic" behavior is different from yours, be it founded or unfounded.

lucky i read this thread! :p

i'm going overseas soon and i have the film pouch. is it advisable to not keep in the pouch and hand check them or just leave it inside the pouch which is inside the camera bag?

i use ziplock bags with see thru canister for the film , n no problem with the immigration.

i learned from previous forumers that using those film canister to protect film , may actually encourage the officer to increase the x ray power just to see wats in those bags.

;)
