"FIFA World Cup trophy in Singapore as part of world tour

SINGAPORE : The FIFA World Cup trophy, the most recognisable sporting icon, is in Singapore as part of a world tour.

Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Vivian Balakrishnan was given the honour of unveiling the trophy for a selected audience at the Asian Civilisations Museum.

The cup, which weighs just over six kilogrammes, is surrounded by tight security 24 hours a day.

Mr Emmanuel Maradas, FIFA Consultant, says six police escorts were at Changi Airport to safeguard the trophy.

"There is a guy in Japan, he tried but he was handled by the security," he says.

Singapore is the 18th stop in the 31-city tour that started in Ghana, Africa and will end in Italy.

So it is no wonder that even the local footballing fraternity could not miss the opportunity for a snapshot.

On Friday, some 10,000 members of the public will get a chance to see the golden trophy for themselves at Suntec City. - CNA/de"

Don't think that many will be able to get a chance to see it.
