actually they were taking turns to take a bite from the pau. i took a few shots b4 getting one with the right timing.

IMHO in the first one, the lady in the background adds to the feel of "publicness" and the unusual behavior of the couple. there seems to be a better balance to the pic, with the L shaped steel beams at top left also complementing the bent elbow of the lady at bottom right, and the hungry lady's face complementing the face on the magazine which the feeding lady is holding.
