I'd like to make some possible suggestions for the February 2009 outing:

1) Thaipusam - 8 Feb (not for the squeamish but colourful and vibrant) Need to firm up quickly for this event. Unfortunately there is no public holiday for Thaipusam.

2) Macro shoot - anywhere got bugs and flowers

3) Landscape shoot - any of the dams/reservoirs

4) Post processing workshop (we have not done this)

Please post other shooting/location suggestions and the dates that you prefer.

Let's do 1!

Another vote for no. 1. Never attended one before, but the crowd can't be all that bad... can it?

No problems. Since Thaipusam, may need to travel earlier to catch the kavadi carriers and firewalkers.

if its your first time, bring ear protection because it will be loud. It will also be packed so a PnS would be ideal but if die die need to take out dslr then bring an all purpose lens.

It can get crowded but there are ample places to shoot the procession.
The route is from Serangoon Road to Tank Road.

There is a display of the kavadis at the Tank Road temple on the 6th. The procession will start on 7th. Road closures from 7th to 9th along the route. There is no restriction on photography and you can actually witness the piercings done at the Serangoon Road temple. There are many devotees carrying the kavadis so the timing is long enough for you to shoot at different times and places.

Err... no fire walkers to my knowledge... that's another festival.

... most of us won't be using PnS lah. Mostly DSLR shooters here...

I'll go for the Thaipusam. Been there for the last two years, would love to shoot again this year:

But does it mean that we can see this from 7th - 9th Feb?

Is there a specific time for some events like parade?

Yes. There will be many devotees carrying the kavadis.
It probably will not be possible to have the time to shoot every devotee.
It will be a whole day affair, so it is possible to shoot in the morning, afternoon or early evening. All depends if photographer can take it. :bsmilie:
So actually there are many opportunities to shoot according our individual schedules.

Can go to the Serangoon Road temple to watch the devotees being pierced and do close ups shots (like fengwei's pictures).
Can also move alongside the road cordons and shoot the devotees as they walk enroute towards the Tank Road temple.

I think I will be probably on for this interesting festival.

Count me and le petit prince for Feb 8!

Register first, for Thaipusam.

Thanks. Those were all taken by K20D plus an FA*28-70 lens at wide open F2.8 aperture last year. Actually I got some even sharper results from the year before, w/ a K100D and FA77:

At 77mm, that's pretty close to get those closeups. Was thinking more of the 70-200mm range.
