Feasible flash?

Hi all. :D

I've never really used a flash unit before, so my question is:
Is it feasible for a macro ring flash unit to be used as a substitute for a normal flash unit?

I would be using in low-light situations and in close proximity with subjects (3-4m) so a really high powered flash unit is unnecessary.

It would very likely to be used for: small group photos(5-7 people), portraits, macro work(duh. lol.), oh and I love the effect it gives.

I don't want to jump the gun.
Buying it and not being able to fully utilize it really hurts the wallet.

The units I'm eying at are:
"Opteka RL-600 ETTL LCD Macro Ring Flash" and "Brilliant Macro Ring Flash DMAF 20ETTL".
I can't afford the canon ring flash.

Additional info (not sure if it this will make your judgment call easier):
Equipment: tamron 28-75 f2.8, sigma 70-200 f2.8, 5D2. Loves shooting at f8.

Constructive input will be greatly appreciated. :D

I've seen people using it for portrait, but only as a fill light to soften the shadow. I don't think it's nearly powerful enough to use as a light source in low-light situation, unless you're doing macro, of course.
